Does draft position really matter?

I wasn't sure where to post this - since it's college and NFL related.

I'm watching ESPN passively right now... Something came up about some guy's draft stock slipping because of his weight.

Now I don't really care about why or who he is - but what I wondered is why does it matter where you get drafted?

1st pick or 85th. You're still the same player, you've still got the same skill sets. I don't get why they're always so obsessed over who goes in the top 10. Does it really matter? As far as I recall, Tony Romo wasn't even drafted and he's currently one of the biggest stars in the league.

I guess I'm just wondering why everyone is so obsessed over what number you're picked in the draft. As if it makes you a better person or player. Sure - it makes a difference in money, and the team (thus training) - but just because you're picked 1st, doesn't mean you get better training; so that's not really an argument.

Re: Does draft position really matter?

Money is the big one for the players. But in terms of media reporting, it gives you an idea of what teams might get what players.

I think most importantly from the "media reporting" stand point is that it gives you an idea of the evaluation of the player. So a guy that is said to be overweight may be looked at as undisciplined, having a bad work ethic, etc. You could just say that about the player but we still wouldn't know how bad that is. I guess relative draft position gives a better idea (knowing where they were expected to go and how far they've fallen... or risen for a more positive example).

Re: Does draft position really matter?

Money is the main reason but you're right draft position shouldn't really matter all that much. I remember when Marv Levy drafted Paul Posluszny and all the draft experts were going nuts and saying how it was a reach. Same goes for when the Bills drafted Leodis McKelvin last year. A lot of experts deemed it a stretch. Both guys have been pretty solid.

It all depends on your scouting and such and if you reach for a guy all the more better. We've seen the reverse where guys like Tom Brady had to wait 2 days just to be drafted! I'm sure many GMs at the time are now banging their heads over that one.
