Historically? You can make a good case.
Well, half the league didn't exist before 1960, so it's a bit of a gimme, isn't it? lol

And a bunch of 180-pound white dudes with no facemasks isn't exactly the NFL in my opinion.

But why look at the numbers if you can't honestly compare the two. Oh, wait, you mean you can't honestly compare.

History doesn't start when your team came into existence. It start in the beginning. Otherwise we could just start keeping score when your team scores.
Winning a championship back in the 30s was like winning a division today. There weren't hardly any teams. lol

That's a very good point.

The question should be best division since the merger.

Looks like NFC East wins.

So the NFL was originated when the facemask was introduced? lol.
I know people who say the NHL STOPPED being in existence when the facemask was introduced.

Re: Best Division in the NFL

First a prelude:

My criteria is not necessarily SB rings/Appearances but rather we're talking about divisions so i'm thinking more about how competitive the teams in the divisions are with each other and how good the teams have been over time etc etc.

All-Time

A toss up between the AFC West and the NFC East

AFC West: The AFC West has seen some very wide open football and generally over the course of the division's history in it's 2 incarnations has had some REALLY tight races with some very competitive teams beating the crap out of each other. Yeah, the Raiders basically owned the division from 1970-78 but since then we've some very tight races with some very exciting teams from the Coryell Chargers, Orange Crush Broncos, The Silver and Black of the Raiders and least but not last the Seahawks which were a very well balanced team from top to bottom. The only franchise that kinda lagged behind were the Chiefs but once they got really good under Schottenheimer then the West truly turned into a wide open and hard fought division from top to bottom.

NFC East: Not too much to say here, what brings this division to the fore was its amazing run in the '80s with some very dominating teams that won SBs and some excellent teams hell, even the Cardinals (yes Virginia the Cards were in the NFC East once) even gave a run for the divisional championship in 1984. The division has never really been truly a top to bottom staggered division other then that sparkling time in the 80s and early 90s but it has shown flashes of brilliance this past decade.

Currently

AFC East: This might seem like a bit of a homer pick but the AFC East looks to be very competitive and interesting this year. We have the Pats, Fins and Bills who all have some intriguing things to the table. The Jets may not have a QB but if I know Rex Ryan they're going to bring some grit on the defensive side and could steal some games. This division could be geared up to be very high octane and offensive minded. It'll be VERY exciting to see what occurs here.

Maybe you two should petition the NFL to change the records and boot out all the 180 lb guys from the HOF that played before 1967 and the legendary coaches from that time. Lets not forget the greatest game in history was in 1959.

I for one think it is important to embrace the full richness of the history of the NFL, including the first seven years of the AFL. I for one won't forget about the names of George Halas, Vince Lombardi, Sammy Bough, Jim Thorpe, and Red Grange. They are part of what has made the sport great. You go back to watching the ice bowl, its still football the same as it is today and the same way it was played when Vince took the team over, before the merger.

But history starts with the first super bowl, the Packers cought lightning in a bottle and luckily won the first two before disapearing into disparity, and we start keeping score when our team scores.
