Re: Kicker David Buehler: interesting pick

As a pure FG, he's big leg little accuracy.

But as a kick off guy, he put a lot and I mean a lot of kickoffs out of the back of the endzone. Made them simply unreturnable.

He also saved the Trojans from giving up more than a few kick off returns for scores because he was able to run down the returner and bring him down. Kid is a very good athlete.

Now would I bust a 5th round pick for him? Probably not, but if field position is a problem in the kick off game, he's a pretty good prospect to help fix that.

I like the pick in that it addressed a "actual" need instead of stockpiling players at a position like many a 5th rounder is picked for.

I'm going to remember this thread when this guy doesn't even make the team.

Won't happen. Jerry Jones said the decision had been made to keep two kickers this season for this purpose. It was a field position pick.

Unless suddenly, he can't kick off deep anymore. Plus, he might play on the punt coverage team as well since he's such a good athlete.

Am I correct in remembering that he was recruited as a safety for USC?

Now Extreme occasionally makes a valid point and in this case he's dead on. Wasn't all that long ago that the Colts tried this very same idea with Dave Rayner when they had the "idiot kicker". Seems that the Cowboys basically invested an entire draft for Roy Williams and to improve kickoff teams. There are a helluva lot of teams out there who don't invest half of what the Cowboys just did in an attempt to improve special teams and are successful in doing so. If they were that concerned about special teams they wouldn't have already resigned Keith Davis, ect.... not invested an entire draft (basically) in trying to improve the units. Now maybe Ferris can cover punts and kicks to, to improve his value.... but this seems like an awful lot when if you just added 3 or 4 coverage guys in the off season to go with a competent special teams coach, you'd be okay.

If you consistently kickoff out the back of the end zone, those 3-4 coverage guys are far less important. McBriar does that for the punt team, kicking high so they can force a lot of fair catches.

Well he's not going to be kicking out the back of the end zone consistently... no kicker does. Just seems to make more sense to have position guys who can cover kickoffs then bringing in another specialist. Teams have tried this and it hasn't been successful in the past. It might make more sense if you have a Morton Anderson type kicker who's automatic from 40 yards in, but doesn't have the leg to kick it much further than that, and then you have a long range specialist... but Nick Folk has shown he can hit from beyond 50.
