What about Lawrence Phillips and Mike Williams from USC? Also Maurice Clarrett.

I think Clarrett wasn't expected to do too much after he was drafted, but I know people thought he would be great while he was still in college. I also expected Mike Williams to be a productive receiver.
You've got it backwards.

The OP is looking for people who were SUPPOSED to be busts. Not people who were supposed to be good when they were in college.

If that's the standard then I'll go Plaxico Burress. When we took him out of Michigan State, EVERY sports pundit declared him a bust. He turned out to be pretty good...

Add Andre Smith to the bust list for this year.

Then you have the combine all-stars (Chris Johnson, Vernon Davis, etc.) who I sometimes differentiate from the "massive bust look" guys. I think it would be hard to find a lot guys who had that label consistently among draft fanatics that actually panned out.

Here are some guys I was down on on draft day that actually flourished:

2003: Scrabble, Calvin Pace*, Nick Barnett
2004: Eli Manning, Chris Gamble, Roy Williams
2005: Roddy White, Aaron Rodgers, Lofa Tatupu
2006: Tamba Hali*, Mathias Kiwanuka, Lendale White, Brandon Marshall

* = still up in the air
Eli's still up in the air. '08 was his first good year.

That's very debatable. Had he done anything less than made the Conference Championship for the '07-'08 season they'd have drafted a guy in the second or third round in the '08 draft. Had he not made the playoffs, they might have taken someone in the first.

Marginal QBs who won Superbowls.

You don't have to be good to win a ring, you just have to not lose the big game ala Rex Grossman who was 2 or 3 first down throws away from beating the Colts.
^Or Big Ben in his first one. No offense.

Honestly, I hate to agree with Steelers fans, but you're right. Eli was garbage until the 2008-2009 season. Now he's developed his older brother's problem - choking in big games... jk. Mostly. It probably would've helped to have some dependable receivers.

In his defense, he admitted to the Tyree catch being a Hail Mary pass and never made any claim to being some great drive-engineer a la Mr. Unitas.

Clarrett ruined his chances at a pro career once he tried to go pro after his freshman year. He had to take a year off from football, didn't stay in shape, but I think he could have been solid had he stayed at OSU.

Are we talking about what ifs, or what is?
