Is Tony Dungy a Hall of Fame Coach?

He's a pretty accomplished head coach, and an innovator with his Tampa-2 defense. He's one of only 3 people to win a Superbowl as a player and a head coach (Ditka and Flores are the other 2).

But, Tony only has ONE RING as a head coach. He built the defense that won Tampa the 2002 Superbowl, but the elves threw Santa out of the workshop the year prior.

So given his coaching greatness but limited Superbowl resume, is Tony a Hall of Famer?

Re: Is Tony Dungy a Hall of Fame Coach?

I would like to think so but weirder things happen.

He's not only credited with turning TB from a dysmal celler-dweller into a playoff powerhouse but he managed to take the Colts to the SB as well. Also, as you stated, the TB SB win can really be attributed much to Dungy over anything else since he built that team (see: Jimmy Johnson & Barry Switzer).

He's also has a 66% winning percentage & took his teams to the playoffs 11 out of 13 seasons as a coach. But more than anything he was a great contributor to the game in having helped create the Tampa-2 defense & making it the en vogue D for the longest time (until the 3-4 came back around).

Not to mention, people love a great, moral person & Dungy is one of those people who people simply love because of his personality, sense of compassion & teaching & words of inspiration to those on and off the field.

I don't think he'd be as good as alot of HOF coaches, but his resume is HOF caliber.

My one qualm with him is that he has only one ring. He walked onto the best offense of the decade and is a defensive genius. How could they possibly have only a single SB victory?

The Steelers and Patriots are good.

Yes. Along with what's been said, he was also the first black head coach to win a SB. Dungy is a HoFer for sure.

Absolutely, but I'm pretty biased, of course.

He won a ton of games, developed a number of players that are on their way to the HOF, is a media darling, and he won a Super Bowl. I don't even think there is question, he's a lock.

Re: Is Tony Dungy a Hall of Fame Coach?

I personally think he's a lock, depending on the HOF class that year he'll be a first ballot guy.

He's a better Marty Schottenheimer IMO. This is no knock on Dungy but they both have won a ton of games and coached some damn fine players. Dungy had the luxury of going to a SB and winning it and building the defense that led Tampa to their only SB so he's more then just a damn good coach he's an innovator and great manager of talent.
