Nobody knows anything but numbers. And numbers don't translate through eras.

I would limit a question like this to say 20 years.
it is possible to get a somewhat accurate judgement on a person by researching facts of their career. I wasnt alive during WWII, but I can research Patton and know he was a great general. You can do the same with sports figures.

Because if we went by that...

ABRAM BOOTY IS THE BEST WR OF ALL TIME (If he would of stayed healthy, broke his back and ended his career)

Don Hutson is the Babe Ruth of Football. I have no problem saying Rice is the GOAT but Don Hutson is right there with him. While comparing different eras is difficult at best, what you can do is look at how much a player dominated in the era he did play in. Just look at these stats for 1942.

Receptions Yards TD's
Don Hutson: 74 1211 17
Next closest: 27 571 8

You're comparing apples and oranges.

It's difficult to truly judge an athlete without really seeing him play. Highlight packages and even single games on TV only provide so much info even.

I simply have a hard time comparing players I saw play a lot over the course of their careers to players I never saw play.

I know Gale Sayers was great, but can I honestly say he was better than Marshall Faulk? No, just have not seen enough of him to say one way or the other.

I would also throw Lynn Swann's name in the hat. He didn't play as long as others, but i've still never seen another receiver like Swann. IMO ahead of his time.

Re: The best WR of all-time not named Jerry Rice?

I haven't seen enough football to argue against Hutson. I've seen his numbers and I saw him on some top ten list on NFL Network (I think it was players who changed the game) and he was far and away the best of his time and he was great for a while. . . His numbers stood is all.

On the other hand, Harrison is the only guy I've seen - in the last two or three years, at least - that is a lock for the Hall of Fame. Randy's great, but he's a quitter. T.O.'s amazing, but he gets too much bad press. Harrison is just an extremely great player who's never had anything said about him on the field.

As of recent, I've heard some bad things off the field, but it seems to just be speculation. Harrison has the record for most catches in a season and he was playing across from Reggie Wayne - a great receiver in his own right, if not quite at Harrison's level.
