Tackling stats not kept until 2001

Tackles aren't even an official NFL statistic RIGHT NOW.

Teams record tackles, then report them to the NFL (as far as I know). That's why they always say you can't go by tackles to decide anything... certain teams keep tackle numbers certain ways and may pad a certain players statistics.

Tackling is a pretty worthless stat anyway. Every team counts their own way and submits it to the league. There is no set standard of what is/isn't a tackle.

So I could see it not existing as a leader category until lately.

oh thats interesting. is there anywhere to find these unofficial stats though for past seasons? I mean almost every website lists individual tackles for single players, but for some reason there are no list or year by year leaders

But it isn't sortable for league leaders. You would most likely have to look up the individual player or team and sort by tackles.

I don't really know where else to turn. Hope that helps though

Tackles are very subjective in that teams will give a guy a tackle even if IRL it's a guy who jumps onto a gang tackle at the very last second. There's also been instances were teams will give star defensive players tackles just to pad their stats and such. That's why the stat is not an official one and only kept by individual teams rather then the league itself.

thanks man, ive been on there, but again for some reason they track and have tackle numbers for every player in history practically---but refuse to sort them like they do every other stat. I dont get it. but thanks guys, i was using this for doing classic NFL rosters

Jessie Tuggle led the NFL in tackles every year of his career because the Falcons basically gave him one for being on the field for a play.
