That is one way too look at it, albeit a very cut and dry way. Another way to look at it is to look at the strengths and weaknesses of both teams and ask yourself, "If I were to start rebuilding a franchise today, which team would I choose?" To me the answer to that question is easily Tampa Bay.
Now, I have watched every down of football that both the Browns and the Buccaneers have played this season. Each team does have glaring weaknesses and each team also has a few good role players. Taking all of that out of the equation and just counting the obvious strengths of both teams, this is the way I see it.
All the Browns have going for them is Shaun Rogers, Josh Cribbs and the left side of their offensive line, namely Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach. So, that adds up to a 30 year old 3-4 nose tackle, a kick return specialist and two very good offensive linemen.
The Bucs don't have too much going for them right now either, but they do have several pieces in place to field an awesome defense again in the very near future. Gaines Adams, Barrett Ruud, Aqib Talib and Tanard Jackson are all 26 and younger and are all better at their respective positions than any defensive player on the Browns besides 30 year old Shaun Rogers. The Bucs also have two very good offensive linemen in Davin Joseph and former Brown Jeff Faine. They also took quarterback Josh Freeman in the first round of the draft this year and while I personally don't think he'll be as good as advertised, we don't KNOW that yet. Unlike Brady Quinn who has already flamed out, Freeman COULD be something. We've also got a pretty good tight end when he's healthy, but I don't need to remind you about that.
To summarize:
Browns strengths: two very good offensive linemen, a dominant yet againg 3-4 nose tackle and a kick return specialist.
Buccaneers strengths: two very good offensive linemen, four very good defensive players under the age of 26, a Pro Bowl tight end and a first round QB with unknown potential.
Now, both teams are bad right now and that is not going to change any time this season, but I just don't see how anyone can say the not so distant future for the Buccaneers doesn't look much brighter than the not so distant future for the Browns.
