Helmet-to-helmets rarely bother me because it's usually only a matter of inches regarding whether or not helmets hit together. If it's something like that one dude who laid out the punt returner the other week, yeah, that's bad. But this Allen hit, I don't know, it certainly wasn't a late hit, he didn't launch himself, and he even tried to hold up a bit as he was hitting him. I'd go with a bit careless, but not really 'dirty'.
The Schaub hits are much more of a concern. Personally, I didn't really have an issue with them, because while the results certainly ended up bad, I'm not sure the hits were intended that way. In both the hits, Allen was falling to the ground as he was approaching Schaub, so he couldn't possibly see when the ball came out, and he had to choose to either dive towards Schaub's legs as he was falling, since that's the only body part he could get to, or just not hit him.
It's unfortunate that the hits got around Schaub's knees, but a lot of unfortunate stuff happens over the course of a game even when guys play the game right. And I think Allen was playing the game right. If you're going down near a quarterback who has the ball or might have the ball, you dive at his legs if that's all you can get. That's why I don't those hits were dirty, Allen didn't go outside of the 'game' and put Schaub at risk. It's not like these hits happened 20 yards away from the ball or anything.
I wouldn't argue with anyone that thought they were dirty, but when I think of dirty plays, I don't really think of Allen's hits.
