Re: Mark Sanchez

Couldn't it also be that Sanchez plays for New York and will constantly get over praised and over criticized because ESPN and the New York media are completely awful at their jobs?

Sounds like it can be corrected, but mechanics aside, his decision making has been pretty bad.
That sounds awfully like Rick Mirer and he played a helluva lot more games in college then Sanchez has. Hopefully Sanchez can get over that but if he can't well....yeah.

That being said, there's a pretty big difference in physical skills between Mirer and Sanchez, and Mirer played in an option first offense at Notre Dame so the games played thing doesn't have a big impact. Factor in that Mirer went to a diaster in Seattle where they chewed up and spit out young QB's for a decade and a half.

Re: Mark Sanchez

Is it mere coincidence though that the best NFL QBs didn't come from top 5 college programs? Think of HoF QBs and those that come to mind, didn't win championships or leave a top-ranked team when they came to the NFL.

We'll see if Sanchez or Vince Young or Tebow break that pattern. Or Bradford, about whom there's supposedly some wariness, even before his injuries this year, because he was rarely pressured.

Or you see guys like Jason White or the Miami QBs in their heyday, perform well in college but are not NFL QBs at all.

Is it that these programs don't recruit the best QB talent? Or that they don't have a chance to develop under the adversity they encounter in the NFL?

How many QB's win titles?

Joe Montana went to Notre Dame
Dan Marino went to Pitt
John Elway went to Stanford

Look at the league now

Drew Brees went to Purdue
Manning went to Tennessee
Palmer went to USC
Rivers went to NCSU,

Etc, most of the elite QB's went to big time programs in big time conferences.

As far as winning titles in college up until recently a large majority of those teams were option or run first teams who physically dominated their opponents on both sides of the ball.

Re: Mark Sanchez

That's what I'm saying, they went to big schools but not necessarily dominant programs.

Manning for instance always seemed to get owned against Florida, didn't do well in big games during his college career.

USC in recent years, whether they were winning national titles or finishing in the top 5/10, even when they had years which didn't meet their expectations, sent so many players to the NFL, probably more than any other school in the last 5-10 years. A lot of high draft picks too.

Sanchez got drafted very high despite his inexperience. He must have done well in his pro day but you also wonder if the Jets weren't influenced by the success of the program. NFL teams should evaluate the player's potential, not his past success or else a lot of good NFL players, including many from smaller schools, would not have been drafted.

Sanchez seems to have a good work ethic, a desire to work at becoming good, which you may not be able to say about Leinart. When you're on a team with way better players than the opposition, attitude may not matter as much. But once you come into the NFL, you have to work as hard or harder than the competition.

Rookie QB's almost to a 'T' struggle their first couple of years. Factor in he really didn't play much in college and it's shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

His physical skills are there, that's plain as day, he's athletic and can make any throw, and he seems to have a very good mental makeup. He simply needs to play, and learn the game at the pro level. Only then will we know if he'll ever get it or not.
Bingo. Learn is the key word. Right now it's poor reads and bad decisions. Thing is all those are fixable with time.
