Re: Bob Sanders... worthless?

Some of the most fun I've had watching NFL defence is because of Sanders. However...he never plays anymore because he is always injured and is most def. injury prone. I'm also not convinced he can play like he did a few years ago.

He was awesome for the colts, but what's the point now?

Lets say they let him go...where would the sanders money be spent? Maybe on a really good linebacker? Like a run-stopping specialist maybe. The colts are pretty solid, but they could always use more talent since Sanders is doing nothing for them.

Check the improvement of the Texans defense once they signed Bernard Pollard. They stopped giving up 70 yard touchdown runs. Instead, they turned into 12 yard runs.

Safeties are the most under-appreciated player on the defense in the NFL. The two teams in the Super Bowl both have awesome passing attacks. You got to have your defensive backfield in order to stop that kind of attack and safeties act as the "field generals" of the defensive backfield. Unless you have someone like Revis, corners are the lesser of importance.

The only thing that it goes to show is that Melvin Bullitt and Antoine Bethea are vastly underrated. That's the reason why missing Bob Sanders isn't such a big deal.

Look at the age of the Steelers' defensive linemen. They got old; last season was just their last fumes in the tank. The Texans got the defensive rookie of the year, but I'd still say their defense didn't get elite or anything with Pollard.

LOL, they got old in one year? Dude, c'mon...you're just kidding yourself. Everyone knows that Polamalu (or Big Ben) is the MOST VALUABLE player the Steelers have. He's a turnover machine. He's the safety valve of that defense. When they didn't have him, they went from bend to break. From Super Bowl champs to one game away from the Wildcard.

Who the hell said the Texans got elite? All I said is they got a hell of a lot better because of Pollard. I sat there and watched every single Texans game this season. Pollard was the reason they got better, not Cushing. And I even bought a Cushing jersey! We had Cushing in the first two games of the season, and we couldn't even think about stopping the Jets and the Titans. Pollard comes in, things change. Cushing is awesome, young, and has more potential, but Pollard is the glue.

Heh, still no answer for D. Sharper?

Because I think you're wrong. Part of the age thing was related to Aaron Smith getting knocked out for the season, and Casey Hampton is beyond his prime enough to not shoulder the load himself. Polamalu could be back next season, but that defense won't be as good as in 2008 because the defensive line is old.

With age, usually the crash comes in one season because some older guys get injured and don't come back to pre-injury form. In addition, guys get banged up by the end of the season and stop playing as well, as evidenced by the Steelers giving up more than 20 points in 3 of their last 5 games of the 2008 season.

I don't credit the Saints' #20 ranking in points allowed or their #25 ranking in yards allowed to Sharper, but I do think it's interesting that the Vikings' rank in yards allowed stayed the same from 2008 to 2009 and their rank in points allowed improved.

You can believe whatever you want about Pollard, but I don't really see too drastic a change in the Texans' defense with him from 22 to 13. The addition of Julius Peppers, which helped the Panthers go from 31st to 2nd, is meaningful to me.

SHARPER HAD 9 PICKS THIS SEASON! That was tied for most in the league! The Saints all together had 26 picks. Sharper is the QB of their defensive backfield!

Vikes D has way too many other good players for me to take that into consideration.

Steelers D had 20 picks last year, 12 this season. Guess who had 7 of them in 2008...? Very good, it WAS Polamalu.

P.S. I don't know if you noticed. The Panthers sucked this year, and Julius Peppers is the best defensive end in football. I'm pretty sure they had him last year too. Not to mention they were 8th in yards allowed and 9th in points allowed. Not 2nd. And they weren't 31st the year before. The only elite defense this season was the Jets, and that's due more to scheming than anything.

You're facts just don't add up lonewolf. I'm afraid your out on your own on this one.

On the Panthers, I was talking about from 2001 to 2002. In 2001 Peppers wasn't in the NFL. In 2002 he played for the Panthers. Not crazy, and actually quite factual if you look it up. Since Peppers has been there, they've been a top 10 defense 5 of the past 8 seasons, and I guarantee that will stop once he's gone.

Vikes D had too many other good players? Exactly, they had a great D-line with Jared Allen and Kevin Williams, both of whom are much more important than safeties.

The Steelers defense is most certainly not simply Troy Polamalu. There was the defensive player of the year, James Harrison, a young LaMarr Woodley, and very underrated Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith.

And why do you care so much about interceptions? They're a result of the offense screwing up more than a good defense. The Packers led the league in interceptions, partly since 6 of them came courtesy of Jay Cutler. In other news, the Bills, Buccaneers, and Titans were top 10 in interceptions and I'd hardly call any of those defenses great.

Re: Bob Sanders... worthless?

Son, the game has changed quite a bit in the last 8 years. It's gone from run heavy to pass happy. And I wouldn't say Jared Allen and the Williams duo are better or more important than Sharper, its the combination that makes them great. By themselves, they'd get shutdown via the double team.

INT's are a byproduct of the offense screwing up because they can't handle the defense. LOL at you calling Casey Hampton "very underrated."

Have you heard of this guy Peyton Manning? I think he's very underrated.
