Texans Lock Up Gary Kubiak through 2012....

The Texans owner says he can get them to the Super Bowl...thoughts? I honestly think if they could land C.J. Spiller in the draft they could very well maker the Super Bowl.

I'm for the move. I think owners like to get rid of coaches too quickly.

I agree. I do find it odd though that the owner admitted he was considering firing him during the season and then now he signs him to a longer deal.

Re: Texans Lock Up Gary Kubiak through 2012....

It's premature at best, especially since Kubiak had a year remaining on his contract anyway. The facts are undeniable - the Texans have made only incremental progress in his four seasons at the helm:

2006: 6-10 (4th in AFC South)
2007: 8-8 (3rd)
2008: 8-8 (3rd)
2009: 9-7 (2nd)

TOTAL: 31-33, zero playoff appearances.

Call me harsh, but I see nothing in that record that merits a contract extension.

Fun fact: since Kubes was hired the Texans are the only team in the NFL that has not either made the playoffs or fired it's head coach. That tells me that most owners feel that the days of "five year plans" in the NFL are over; it's a win now league. Clearly Mr. McNair is an exception to the rule.

Now I'm not necessarily saying that Kubes should have been fired (although I wouldn't have had a problem with it if he had been), but it's my opinion that at the least Kubiak should have been told in no uncertain terms that he was coaching for his job in 2010.

Instead, McNair has in effect sent a message to the entire organization that average or slightly above average is good enough.

Houston was an expansion team, it takes time to build a consistent winner. Good move especially with a potential lock out looming, you want to ave some consistency if there is a lock out so upon returning to games the players don"t have to learn a new system.

The Texans just completed their eighth NFL season.

E-i-g-h-t-h.

The expansion team excuse no longer applies.

Do the Texans even have any players remaining from their expansion year? I don't think they do. That said, I don't mind the extension. I also wouldn't have minded a firing. The Texans are a good team. They could've easily been 12-4, 13-3 this year. They let sooooo many games slip away. They had trouble closing out games. They're also a relatively young team that isn't all too experienced. Give them another year or so, more experience, and I think they'll be in the Playoffs and possibly contending for a Super Bowl.

Especially considering the three previous expansion teams made the playoffs in their fourth, second, and second years.
