Here's a novel idea:

Play defense.

Give me a break, NFL. Leave Overtime alone, there is NOTHING wrong with it. If you fail at stopping the other team, stop crying, you FAILED.

Peace.

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs

I'm still pissed at the Colts OT Playoff loss to the Chargers in '08. What happened? Exactly what I suspected.. Chargers won the coin toss, drove right down the field and won the game. Manning didn't even see the field in OT. I knew the game was over right when SD won the toss. Our defense couldn't stop a damn thing all day.

So yes, I'd love for it to be changed. It's only more fair to give both offenses a chance to win, especially in today's offensive league.

In the regular season, play an extra 7:30.

In the playoffs, play an extra 15:00.

Whoever's up at the end, is the winner. I don't see what's so complicated about it.

Not if the team getting the ball first scores a TD
I guess they don't want to the third an important element out of the game and that is special teams... College OT system is a joke....

I can't recall the exact stat but teams that win the coin toss only go on to win 54% of the games. That's very marginal, IMO, and shows that the coin toss means nothing. Just because it's OT doesn't mean your defense needs to stop playing defense, in fact, this is when they should step it up.

Would you want to start OT on the edge of your own goaline where you have to worry about a safety?....And if you do go 3 and out, the opponent will end up with very good field position.
This is a great idea!

They are making it harder then it has to be. Just guarentee each team one offensive possession.

Re: NFL could change overtime format for playoffs

I don't get why everyone feels teams are entitled to have a possesion in OT. Everyone always bitches about the NFL favoring offense and screwing the defense over all the time, well OT is the defense's chance to step it up. It's like saying that hockey should change it's overtime rules if a team wins a faceoff, goes up the ice and scores without the other team ever touching the puck. Your goalie's job is to stop the puck, if he doesn't do it before you've had the chance to touch the puck then you shouldn't get a chance to respond just cause it's not fair that the game ends on the first goal. Defense is apart of football, going to overtime doesn't mean time to slack off on defense cause your offense can bail you out. That's what the other four quarters are for.
