Re: NFL moves umpires to offensive backfield

Outside of finally seeing the elimination of using refs as obstacles in pick plays, I don't really see this changing anything all that much. The umpire, if he's doing his job right, isn't looking at the QB at all, he's looking at the linemen. If this leads to anything, I think it'll be more holding calls. Quite possibly more facemask calls on the offensive linemen as well.

What took them so long? They should've done this years ago. There's no reason for the umpire to be on the defensive side of the ball, in the middle of all the action. It's dangerous and all it essentially does is give the offense more of an advantage by being able to exploit pick plays with your receivers.

It should be interesting to see if this will really eliminate pick plays. You still see them from time to time even away from the umpire but having him behind the offensive backfield i'm thinking he and the other officials will get to see such attempts more easily.

Exactly what I was thinking. Should have done this sooner.

I've always wondered how refs kept from getting demolished by a 250+ linebacker or a wide out coming across the middle. The article stated in the 2009 season 2 refs got a concussion and a 3 more suffered serious enough injuries to require surgery. "Mike Pereira, the league's outgoing vice president of officiating, has long expressed concern about the safety of umpires."

My best guess is with the all the serious concussion issues Goodell has had to deal with he probably found it best to give them what they were asking for.

I believe there will be a lot more Holding calls. Which I think is good.
Give the D a break. All the rules favor the offense..

Also when a Ref calls has called a bad holding call, the other
official could correct him...

So using the ref as a pick is cheating now? Your overuse of the word cheating is bordering on hilarious.

WR is the most loathed position in all of sports to me and I have no problem with them doing something as long as it's within the framework of the rules.

For a guy that longs for the "good old days" of the NFL one would think you of all people would be ok with this. Was it cheating back in the days when the goalposts were at the front of the endzone and WR's used them to pick off defenders?

I predict more ticky tack roughing calls. I could be wrong, but only time will tell.
Dude, you hate on QB's at every possible chance don't you? Its amazing. If the NFL is so annoying to you why don't ya go check out Arena or Rugby? Maybe more your style.

Re: NFL moves umpires to offensive backfield

Technically, all refs have a purpose so moving the umpire will give him better advantage at the line. his job will not be judging qb hits unless its in front of him his concern will be the line that is his job .
