In some cases the QB's simply are successful despite their mechanics. Imo, at times the whole mechanics thing is overrated.
What is wrong with Tebow throwing mechanics?

Phillip Rivers? You think his throwing mechanics are text book? That was a HUGE question mark in his being drafted.

Kerry Collins had and still does to a lesser extend a huge hitch in his delivery coming out of college. McNabb as well.

Drew Brees due to his lack of arm strength had to really wind up to get the ball down the field. He actually improved his core strength which helped his ability to get the ball downfield, and he throws the ball with much greater anticipation to overcome this as well.

Did Rivers have a quasi side arm delivery coming out of college.

I think the knock on him is he brings the ball low before he throws and sort of winds up, creating a hitch. As you know in the NFL, that hitch allows defenders the chance to get a jump on where he's going with the ball. With NFL defenses being so fast, having an ultra quick release has really become a premium. They've worked on him keeping the ball higher and eliminating that hitch.

Some guys can overcome it and lessen the hitch, some guys can't and some guys can be succesful despite it. It remains to be seen where Tebow falls.

But this notion he simply can't throw, I just don't understand.

There is absolutely nothing similar about.

Tebow wasn't a poor thrower. He's not ready to be a drop back passer in the NFL, but he's finished in the top four of passer rating nationally every year he's started. Crouch was an abysmal passer in every way. Obviously Tebow had better offensive talent around him, but as stated, he also played against much better talent and coaches.

Both Tebow and Crouch could run, but their running styles weren't remotely similar. Tebow is a tank who is used in short yardage and only really breaks away when defenses sell out. Crouch was much quicker and was far more agile than Tebow could ever hope to be.
I am 32 and yes I watched them both play. They were similar in that they both ran the football well, Crouch with speed and Tebow with Power. Both were not graceful throwers of the football.

Now your gonna give me passer ratings as means of success. I could give you a whole laundry list of QB's who had great numbers but failed in the NFL because in reality they were system qb's. Tebow is a great college quarterback and does not need success in the NFL to validate it. I don't know why people need to defend that.

His delivery was even lower out of college. It's not really side arm, he sort of pushes the ball out of his hand instead of a more natural throwing motion.

The story is, when he was a kid (his dad was a coach) he was a ball boy, and the ball was to big for him to throw, so he threw it like that, and that throwing action stuck with him.

Yes

It was bad enough that coming out of high school Auburn and Alabama wanted him for tight end or defense.

Re: Tim Tebow = Steve McNair...?

Ball security was another issue with Tebow's throwing motion since he drops it below his waist.
