Running backs should be paid almost entirely in incentives.
It's not like they will be shy about cutting him if he doesn't play up to his contract. They need to work out a deal short term deal to get him on the field.

I also hate the idea of incentive laden contract in a team sport like football. I

You shouldn't even look at year by year salaries in the NFL.

With all the wacky ways salaries and bonuses are computed, individual yearly base salaries are often way over/under valued, but when taken as a whole are normal.

The only position I'm for being incentive based is running back.

This is a smart negotiation ploy on his part though. Business is business.
They actually break it down in the article (click the link).

EDIT: It's actually 550K
It's the way of the world but I can never side with the athletes in these cases. If you have faith in your skills then sign a contract that makes more sense to begin with. There was no reason for him to sign a 5 year deal. The thing that bugs me about situations like this is if he ran for 500 yards this coming season, would he allow the Titans to renegotiate his contract back to being closer to what he originally signed for? Of course not.

No but they can cut him at any time. And only lose the guarenteed money we can argue he already earned last year.

Money that amounts to millions... likely 10's of millions if he gets what he thinks he deserves after one season.

Bottom line is any player can sign a better contract to begin with. They sign 5 year deals for security. If I'm a player who thinks I will outperform my rookie contract the way CJ was saying he would from day one, then I wouldn't have signed a deal for more than 3 years... 2 if that's allowed. Why not take that chance if you're that confident in your skills? The reason is bc you know you can cry your way out of that contract and that's BS imo.

My point is teams arent completely helpless. We're not talking about some unproven rookie(J****ssell) cashing in before he ever does anything. We're talking about a player who is arguably the best at his position. Team's always have the right to cut a player thats not living up to there contract or ask them to restructure it.
