Jackson experiment may be over

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/..._finished.html

The Marlin Jackson experiment lasted all of 83 days.
Less than three months after the Eagles signed the free agent safety to an incentive-laden two-year contract, Jackson ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right leg during practice Tuesday.

his season is likely over long before it ever started, and his career appears to be in jeopardy. The Eagles did not say if Jackson would undergo surgery, but he also has the added misfortune of two recent ligament tears in both knees that made him such a risky signing in the first place.

And people wonder why some players seem less than excited about OTA's?

Very unfortunate for him. I hate see guys' careers cut short by a string of crazy bad luck and injuries.

And they are always looking to re-do their contracts.

So basically you're saying a team should want to re-do a contract for a player so he could get paid if he has a season/career threatening injury? Not that it has anything to do with redoing a contract since the idea of signing a contract is to actually play out the contract but yeah, people wonder why teams won't just throw money at guys.

Even the OTAs comment. So assuming this can pretty much happen any day at practice he would've been good for another couple of weeks and still miss the season? I don't see how OTAs caused this.

What?

I'm saying that players face a certain level of risk of injury every time they set foot on a field, even when it's just in shorts and helmets.

The law of averages suggests that if you play pro football sooner or later you are going to sustain some sort of injury. The only real way to minimize that risk is to cut back on the number of opportunities for something bad to happen. An obvious starting place to cut back is with the (largely unneccessary) OTA's.

I'm confused. Either I agree with you ("players face a certain level of risk of injury every time they set foot on a field") or you're contradicting yourself a bit. If it's a freak injury and not one from wear and tear, then (as you said) it could happen at any time. The only way to avoid freak injuries is to never step on the field.
