Sacks...

I'm a big stat guy and thought of this sometime ago (i'm sure i'm not the only one), as all of you know they became an official stat in 1982.

Now I assume the NFL would have an archive of every NFL Game played from the 1980s, 70s, 60s and 50s (maybe)......and if they don't then it wouldn't work...

They could get a couple of guys to go through every game from 1981, fast fowarding through the games and stoping when they see a sack, recording who it was and so on.....then 1980, 1979 etc....

I'm aware this would take alot of time but it was just a thought i had, and it would be pretty cool..... and hell i'd volunteer to do it.

Re: Sacks...

Actually even though it wasn't an official stat NFL broadcasters would refer to a guy having "x" amount of sacks during a game as far back as the mid '70s so it's a lot easier then you think. A lot of teams kept sack totals back then though every team recorded them differently but the number was tallied.

Yeah i thought that all the teams could just tell whoevers in charge of the stats what they've recorded, but it would be 'unofficial'...... so if they got a bunch of people looking through every game then it would be 'official'......... if that makes sense.

Re: Sacks...

I read something on this a few years back.

Seem's the problem is the headache of arguing with the team's self kept stats vs what the film shows. I guess coaches tended to "share" sack amoung players just a bit more loosely than math would allow. I hear the same occurs even today on tackle numbers.

Re: Sacks...

It was an unofficial stat and I don't think those past stats will ever be counted. When it comes to unofficial stats, teams LOVE to over do it. I mean, even guys like the great Ray Lewis would sometimes get credited with 10-15 tackles a game even when he only made about 4 or 5 on his own. It's just all subjective to a team.
