I think the signing bonus is the last thing on his mind. If he cared about the money he would never have retired in the first place. Bottom line is contract or no contract the owners can't stop him from walking away on his own term. Thus they don't have all the leverage.

So being able to retire and lose your signing bonus is leverage? That's what you think?

Good for Glen. It takes a man to know when to walk away.

And I'm sure if he was asked, he'd probably give back money if he absolutely had to. When you have a higher calling, you DO NOT ignore that.

Re: Glenn Coffee retires...

I applaude Glen on his choice. Some folks spend their entire lives finding their calling/passion, some never find it at all. Same as Ricky, same as Tiki Barber, if your heart isn't in it, find your hearts true desire. Yea its a team sport, but in the end its a portion of your life thats wasted if its directed towards something that you know isn't a passion, and in the end its only a game. Some lose themselves in it, and when they're done there's nothing else, but possibly empty memories. Its good when people pursue true happiness and find it...this aint any different.good ish man, good for him.

Re: Glenn Coffee retires...

I'm sorry but, the way he left isn't very professional. Just leaving without and explanation to the team or even his agent. Bottom line is he quit.

At least it looks like the Niner's will get back some of his signing bonus.

The team will be able to recover the balance of his $828,000 signing bonus on a four-year deal.

It works out to $621,000.

I think it's a 50/50 chance that he will be back at practice come Monday. we shall see....

I think being able to walk away when you want to is leverage to an extent. He is losing his signing bonus but the niners could lose a lot more. If the 49ers ownership had all the leverage, Glen Cofee would still be playing right now.

Like I said, obviously it isn't about the money for Cofee. If it was he would be at training camp.

Re: Glenn Coffee retires...

I would be pissed if I was Coffees teammate. Our starting HB is injury prone with no proven backup besides him. He is being counted on to carry the load if Gore goes down again. So when Gore gets hurt and they can't run the ball I would think to myself damn if Coffee ain't quit on us we might be able to run the ball.
