wouldn't he just lock up another threat and allow them to double winslow, insteadf, since it's such a bad physical matchup?

Good question. Quite possibly. Most teams changed who they doubled from play to play against them. With the Chargers having three big time threats (Chandler/Jefferson,Joiner,Winslow ) someone was going to be left in single coverage. Not to mention guys like James Brooks coming out of the backfield. Or the run threat of Brooks and Chuck Muncie.

They must have had a crappy defense, because their offense was top notch back then. You think they would have won at least one superbowl.

Their defense was decent in '79 and '80 and started going off the rails by '81 onwards. The '79 team crapped the bed by losing to a banged up Oilers team. The '80 team was undone by Fouts' INTs and Oakland just plain outplaying them in the AFC Championship game. We all know what stopped the Chargers in '81 though....Damn cold weather in Cincy. I personally feel the '81 team might've beaten San Fran if they had the chance.

I don't think so Montana would have got it done. No matter who they played.

In 81? Not so sure.

Just to put things in perspective. That offense put up nearly 7000 yards of total offense that year. 4700+ passing and 2000+ rushing.

Yeah they beat the Cowboys and were coming in on a big high. They would be hard to stop in my opinion. Maybe the chargers could have but my money would be on Joe and Bill to get it done.
