Yup... really no room for gray in this rule. Where do you draw the line then if that was ok? Official was doing his job and and Smith put his hand on him, that SHOULD be all it takes.

He should have known better. You don't shove any part of the ref no matter how hard or soft it seems. That is like a student shoving a teachers arm when he's trying to stop a potential scuffle. Your going to get into trouble and unfortunately the only rule for that is ejection.

Re: Week 15: TNF - 49ers @ Chargers

Big difference between Smith and Rivers (there are some 49ers fans who still cling to hopes that Alex will pan out).

49ers trailing 10-0 and ball around midfield on 3rd and 3, they blitz one and SMith steps up into a sack. The right side of the line crumbled but on short yardage play, he wasn't prepared to get a short completion to move the chains. Westbrook was going out on a circle type of route to the right side. Last week, that turned into a long TD play. This time, Alex ate the sack.

Next drive, Rivers is blitzed on 3rd and long and he gets the ball off just as he's being hit and the play goes for like 30 yards plus a PF.

Now trailing 17-0, Alex again takes a sack. Protection wasn't the greatest but again, he had even more time than the previous series and he could have gotten rid of the ball.

Maybe it's play design but when the Chargers are taking away the vertical routes, he has to be able to hit some quick underneath routes just as the defense drops back. Rivers hit on two of those underneath routes the series before, including the TD to Jackson. And the series before that, against 8 man coverage, he hit about a 5-6 yard pass that went for about an 8-yard gain.
