First as a little sidebar, I love how some Cowboys fans misspell Irvin's name as Irving. It's like they probably think that the Cowboys played in a place named after him (Irving, Texas)

Anyways back to this, I've been watching the Jimmy Johnson years and I have to say that Irvin is very very close to Rice's level. The guy was a very savvy WR in that he was very physical but he had enough finesse to make some very graceful catches. He was one of those guys who would take the rules and try everything in his power to take advantage of them. A great example of this would be that he would almost always be holding on and pushing off defenders way after the 5 yard mark. Strangely enough the refs never noticed it or disregarded it.

Irvin was as good and in some aspects was probably a better route runner than Rice in that some of the plays Dallas ran had Run n' Shoot elements in that the receiver had to make adjustments on the fly along with the QB so Irvin had to adjust and think alongside Aikman. I don't know if Rice ever had to do that though I suspect he'd probably be just a shade below Irvin in that regard.

Irvin could dominate a game but because of the offense Dallas ran his numbers aren't as plentiful as other WRs of his generation but if you watch him play you saw that he was a HOF talent. Still, I think Rice was the greatest WR ever because while he may not have been the most gifted physically he more than made up for it with his hard work and determination.

I am sure JNes knows who he is...the Cowboys fan spelled his name as Irving instead of Irvin. I really don't know how anyone can argue that Irvin is better than Rice...you could argue that Irvin is an all time great, but I don't see anyway you can put him above Rice. Rice has the numbers, the rings, the durability/career length, and the eye test all in his favor. I think you could actually make an argument that Rice has been the best football player to play in the NFL period.
