Cedric Benson (and co) vs NFLPA

What the hell was the NFLPA thinking making a deal in which a select few players could be suspended. As soon as I got word of this I thought well that's just a law suit waiting to happen.

Obviously someone on that list was going to take them to court, and I can't see how Benson is not going to win. Cedric Benson (and the others named) pay in to this union and they pretty much threw these guys under the bus.

But why would the NFLPA feel the need to do this? Who are they protecting? Hines Ward (maybe) and Jerome Harrison (another maybe)? Why wouldn't they just say that everyone is subject to a suspension and then not face this law suit. I imagine Cedric Benson and anyone else who misses a game that is on this list will get at least their salary paid during that period of time.

Can you sort of tell us what the situation is? I heard them say they didn't suspend Benson today so he's eligible to play this Sunday, but they never mentioned what the actual suit was about
