Re: Al Davis Passes Away

One of the coolest guys in the history of the NFL, a pioneer, an outstanding owner, and above all a guy who loved football and loved the Oakland Raiders.

RIP Crazy Al, I wish every team had an owner half as passionate as him.

For all the crap he took the last few years, no one can deny the legacy the man left not just in the NFL but football.
He was progressive in a lot of ways and I respect him for that. RIP

Why? Seriously, just leave it alone.

Re: Al Davis Passes Away

Some people need to learn how to separate sport from reality here. Al Davis was one of the most influential people in the history of professional football, no matter your opinion of him this isn't the time to point out his decisions that you didn't agree with.

Re: Al Davis Passes Away

Before the merge, Davis was named Commissioner of the AFL. His philosophy was total war on the NFL.
One of the things he did was encourage the other AFL owners to high bid top NFL talent. In one week, the AFL signed Roman Gabriel off the Rams, John Brodie off the Niners, and Ditka off the Bears.
When they went to Ditka, they asked him if he'd like to play in the AFL...
"Are you kidding? I make $30,000 a year with the Bears".
So I think it was Bud Adams, says.. "Well, then how would youlike to make $100,000 with my Oilers"?
Ditka; "Done Deal! Where do I sign?"
And the next day, Wellington Mara of the NY Giants just happened to decide to meet Lamar Hunt at a racetrack for lunch. Neither of these guys played the ponies.
Long story Short... Out of the blue there was an immediate merge afterwards.
But now, you have to understand.. Davis HATED the NFL. He opposed realignment until he and Vince Lombardi got into a heated shoving match over the Steelers, Colts, and Browns joining the AFC.
Thats Al Davis. God love him, and RIP Mr. Davis Your kind will be missed.

Re: Al Davis Passes Away

He was the first owner to hire minority coaches in the modern NFL:

Tom Flores and Art Shell

No disrespct to Dallas or Mel Gibson, but Al Davis is the real Maverick and will truly be missed. RIP Mr. Davis
