Ryan Fitzpatrick: Bills can get out of Fitzpatrick's contract

The Bills can take themselves off the hook for nearly $49 million of Ryan Fitzpatrick's recent six-year extension if they release him after this season.
A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that the Bills could cut or trade Fitzpatrick before the seventh day of the 2012 league year, and get away with paying only his 2011 salary of $3.22 million and the $10 million signing bonus paid on October 28. The Bills "owe" Fitzpatrick a $5 million option on that date. If he continues to play like he has since signing the extension, Fitzpatrick would not be worth the option, let alone what's left of the deal

He's made us semi-relevant, and I think that's about the best we could have hoped for with Fitzpatrick. When muggins and SPTO say we don't operate in a vacuum, that's what they mean. He's made us practically winners, and that's really all we expected out of him. He got us to start believing he could be more, but I don't think so. He's a good backup to have an an average to below average starting QB. Think of a guy like Jon Kitna (from a few years ago) or Shaun Hill. Good for a few stretches of games filling in, but not starter material game in and game out.

That would be really interesting if the Bills were to trade or release Fitzpatrick....However if he continues to stink it up and the Bills end up with a relatively high draft pick I say release him and try to sign him to a much smaller deal and draft a QB.

Dunno if he'd wanna come back with a significantly smaller deal but it's worth a try. Even if he doesn't at least Buffalo could end up drafting a QB and not have to worry about paying Fitzpatrick all that money for being a backup in a couple years.
