Re: Defending Champions?

It's quicker and easier to say than the Giants are trying to repeat what they did last year or the team that won the Super Bowl last year.

To me it's an argue on semantics that isn't important one way or the other.

The only term I have a problem with in regards to winning a championship is "world champion." Its more like intercontinental champion. If New York won the super bowl then played and beat China in a championship then they would be world champions.

Until China or any other country fields a team, don't they forfeit by default?

The fact that they have to play every single game like everyone else who is not a champion to earn a playioff spot. Then the fact that they also have to win every playoff to get to the superbowl like everyone else means they are defending champs?

Im sorry what are they defending? They just had to go through the whole entire process again to get back to the championship. I did not see a free pass to defend it.

Yes they won last year. Congrats on that, but for the new year you have to START ALL OVER AGAIN to get to the championship.

Like I stated in Boxing it makes sense every fight you fight is a championship fight once you win that belt, but not at all in other sports. No of them are given a free pass to play in the championship game to defend it.

I think some of you make good points if you are considering teams in a vacuum, but it's really the franchise that is the defending champion.

You have to "qualify" just to defend it. I don't think a fighter has to keep climbing the ladder after he wins the belt. He doesn't win the belt, then start over.
