But this is not boxing so the definition in regards to this sport is different.

No one has to "qualify" to play week one.

I think the term is overused and over valued but I don't see how anyone can argue that they aren't the defending super bowl champions right now and throughout the season until the Super Bowl is over.

You have to qualify to make the playoffs. As a SB champion, you start exactly as the worst team in the league the year before. You don't defend anything. That's my point. Nothing gets defended.

Playoffs should've been over after the divisional round when the Giants defeated the "reining super bowl champions".

LOL, if you want to argue semantics just to argue, have fun...

They won the Super Bowl, this isn't boxing as some of you are trying to make it. It's pretty simple, they were the last team to win a Super Bowl thus making them the defending champions.

Just think there's no such thing as defending champions in football.

Re: Defending Champions?

I'm one to argue and be a stickler for semantics...but damn, even this is going to extreme here.

Defending Champion, Reigning Champion...does it really make THAT much of a difference to some of you? They're the defending champion until proven otherwise.

Re: Defending Champions?

All I know is that the Packers coaches preached during training camp last season, "We are now the hunted. We have to turn that around and become the hunter.

Teams will be gunning to "knock off" the former, defending, super bowl champions.
