If it isn't broke, no need to fix it.

It is fine as it is with 12.

Replace Goodell with 'the owners' and the target of your acrimony would be more accurate.

These are changes being considered by the competition committee, Goodell is just the one talking about them.

  • This could get such a negative reaction that an 18 game schedule might not look as bad all of the sudden. Will be interesting to see if any monetary figures come out for both 18 games and expanded playoffs, and then have the NFLPA come out for/against a published increase to player salaries as a result.
  • At some point in the near future, 16 teams might not be half the league.
  • To get around the mediocre teams getting in argument (which happens anyways to some degree now) it would be interesting if the extra playoff games/format was instead triggered by x number of teams not making it that have 10 wins. There's your 'play in games' scenario basically, turning the late regular season into a 'win and your in' by triggering the extra games.
  • More teams in the hunt for the playoffs further reduces meaningless games
I believe the league will be expanding to 34 teams sooner than later. Could be two teams in LA or somewhere else.

Re: 16 Team Playoffs?

No. Just no.

Edit: After thinking about it for a moment, I guess I could be okay with 14 teams. Makes being the top team in your conference even more meaningful with the lone bye. However, the system isn't broken and shouldn't be tinkered with. If we move to say 36 teams, then thinking about increasing playoff size is acceptable.

Normally I don't mind changes as much as some others do on OS. But I hate this idea. The NFL has the best playoff format of all pro sports. 12 is perfect. About a 3rd of the teams make the playoffs, and even better is that playoffs spots are tiered to reward the better teams with homefield and byes.

The playoffs are great the way they. Don't fix what isn't broken.

Re: 16 Team Playoffs?

To see why this is a bad idea, we just need to look at the current playoff picture. If the season ended today:

NFC:
Falcons (Bye)
49ers (Bye)
Packers (Div)
Redskins (Div)
Seahawks
Giants

If we went to 16 teams, we would add MIN and CHI to those teams. MIN has had a strong run, and surpassed expectations, but they're still a 1-dimentional team. CHI has done fairly well, but they are on a 3 game skid and have 2-3 against the Division.

AFC:
Texans (Bye)
Broncos (Bye)
Patriots (Div)
Ravens (Div)
Colts
Bengals

We would add the Steelers and Jets. The Steelers are merely doing average, and average should not be rewarded. But the Jets have a losing record, and a team with a losing record should NEVER be in the playoffs (Yes, it has happened a few times, but it is EXTREMELY rare, and should stay that way).
