I still thought it was the right decision for the sole fact that the team was still in playoff contention. It's easy for us as fans to say "they're not going to make it anyway and if they do, they won't do anything" but imagine being a player on the team and basically hearing your Coach say "Hey, even though we're still in contention, we probably won't make it anyway so we're going to shift our focus towards next season when half of you may not be here even though you're here now".

TLR - It's always easy for us as fans to second guess when we're not the ones making the decision.

I don't know how anyone who watched the games thought Hoyer gave us the best chance to win. Even a rookie making a bad start is likely to be better than what Hoyer has done the past 3 games.

Starting Manziel, IMO, was the right move now and the future. Hoyer has been exposed as a backup QB, which is fine, but if you are playing your backup for 14 games, then this is what ultimately will happen.

If anything, I think they destroyed the team's playoff chances by giving Hoyer the reigns until he pretty much destroys all hope. And he did exactly that.

Hoyer did get them to the 7-5 point, but the Hoyer at the beginning of the season has been long lost, replaced with his diabolical twin brother who cannot hit open receivers and is turning the ball over.
The mistake wasn't starting Hoyer, the mistake was being unwilling to make a change once he proved he didn't have it. Pettine should've pulled him anytime between the 2nd and 4th quarter and we have a shot at not blowing the game.

Sticking with Hoyer was the mistake, starting him was perfectly fine, he took us to 7-5 give him a shot to pull out of the funk, he didn't do it and should have been pulled.

This.

Hoyer is not a starting QB in this league, plain and simple. He over achieved against an pretty easy early season schedule and really the Browns won against the Falcons in spite of him. I can see the argument made about affording him an opportunity to pull out of the funk (although I disagree with it), but it was pretty clear, pretty quickly in this game that he wasn't going to get it done. Missed throws, poor 3rd down decisions not being aware of where the ball needed to be. Which is unfortunate because the defense deserved to win that game, and his inability to keep the offense on the field cost them as a whole. The missed throw to Gordon at the end pretty much summed up his last 4 games at QB.

At this point, you have to make the change. Down a game in both the division and wild card standings with two out of the next 3 games against divisional opponents with still a very real chance of making the playoffs, you can't afford to continue to let Hoyer cost you football games while you let him try to find it on the field. Time is running out.
