Just to add. After a first used is flag. They are not equipped with a second flag. So they are trained to throw their hats.

Edit yard marker* my bad

I know it's been used, I just never asked about it so I've never known. Just thought about asking it now.

And I get it, they use it to spot the ball in case of something. But they are throwing it. What if they are a yard off? Two yards off? I've seen tosses that aren't that accurate. Do they still use it as an accurate measure of something still?

This why I have such a problem with the culture we're creating with instant replay. You have to remember football... Actually all of these sports were created when we didn't have super slow mo lol. So if the ref can get close. You're talking about a yard or 2. If an INT or fumble happens. They usually want to bring the ball back to where it happen. The yard marker usually happens right in front of them. It's not like Flag way there are throwing it into a crowd or far away.

What you really should be worried about. Is players moving it. That I've seen.

By the way, I was trying to explain that most people don't even catch the ref throwing it. I thought it was a great question.

I feel ya. You just don't often see them doing it anywhere else on the field. I figured like anything else, they could just "remember it" when they see it, and note it for later. I wondered why this was a special case and that they simply used it as a reference point or they rely directly on it.

No haha, though I am upset that I drafted Kelce 2nd and Ertz 3rd, and they literally do nothing on offense (plus when Ertz does, he's not in bounds).

I'm talking about an audio bit that you can hear in the background of this game before the Maher kick.

NSFW
