USFL announces plans to return in spring 2022

https://sports.yahoo.com/usfl-announ...141657692.html

The United States Football League is coming back.

The first incarnation of the USFL failed after three seasons when the league tried to move games to the fall and compete with the NFL in 1986, but plans to relaunch the league were announced on Thursday. Spring League founder and CEO Brian Woods has partnered with FOX Sports to bring the league back as an eight-team operation that will play in spring 2022.

“I’m extremely passionate about football and the opportunity to work with FOX Sports and to bring back the USFL in 2022 was an endeavor worth pursuing,” Woods said in a statement. “We look forward to providing players a new opportunity to compete in a professional football league and giving fans everywhere the best football viewing product possible during what is typically a period devoid of professional football.”

In addition to broadcasting games, FOX also owns a minority equity stake in the league.

Information on where teams will play and what they will be called has not been announced, although the release announcing the league’s return mentions that the new entity “retains rights to key original team names” from the original league. It does not specify which names, so we’ll have to wait to see if the Denver Gold, Tampa Bay Bandits or Memphis Showboats live to play another day.

Jeff Fisher is returning to the sidelines to coach the Michigan Panthers. I guess we can pencil in the Panthers for a 5-5 season.

I'm old enough to remember the original USFL. The other spring leagues did nothing for me, but I'm at least mildly interested in this.

I'm old enough too. I liked the original and watched it closely. I went to a couple of Houston Gamblers games as a kid.

I, like you, have a mild interest in this iteration but it's probably just nostalgia and I think it's a huge turnoff that all of the games this season will be in Birmingham.

Starting in April is what may save this league IMO. So many other leagues failed because they started immediately after the Super Bowl and the contrast in quality is too stark.

Wait until late spring or summer and I'll be twitching like an addict on withdrawals.

Let’s hope nothing derails this league like it’s predecessors

I wish it was the XFL returning but I guess we will see how this goes.

Re: USFL announces plans to return in spring 2022

USFL 2.0 reveals their team uniforms:

I am mostly unimpressed. The Houston Gamblers home uniform (the black-on-silver uniform) is my favorite of the bunch by default. The Michigan Panthers uniforms is an extremely busy color palette (burgundy / yellow / blue / white); I am honestly not sure if I love it or hate it. I want to like the New Orleans Breakers (the blue team) uniforms more than I do but they are missing something. The Philadelphia Stars look like they are sponsored by McDonald's. Most of the others are unremarkable to me.

Who the heck was the genius who decided to let a professional sports team in Pittsburgh abandon black and yellow? Literally every professional sports team in the city wears those colors, and there is an extremely strong regional identity and association with those colors. I actually really like the purple and orange color combo, but not for a team in Pittsburgh, come on now lol.
