    RIP Wade Belak

Former Nashville Predators tough guy Wade Belak was found dead in a Toronto hotel Wednesday afternoon.

The 35-year-old from Saskatoon was found in the tony 1 King West hotel and condo residence just blocks from the Air Canada Centre.

Belak retired in March after a long NHL career that included stops in Colorado, Calgary, Toronto, Florida and Nashville. He was recently announced as one of the ex-NHLers who would be performing on CBC's Battle of the Blades this year.
Man, I used to love listening to his local radio show.

    RIP Wade Belak

If you want to say it happens in 3's, than Belak is the 3rd person.

Belak was only 35 years old. It looks like he killed himself.

I know people are going to link this suicide to fighting right away.

      HOLY $^$$^

I didn't see this coming AT ALL.

R.I.P. to Wade Belak, he wasn't much of a player from a skill perspective but he knew his role on the teams he was on and was reportedly a "glue" guy in regards to chemistry on the team.

      Wow....

I won't speculate on things but this is a very disturbing trend.

The Sun took down the suicide headline

Still unfortunate, 3 enforcers in 4 months, very sad

        RIP Wade

I heard on the radio that Belak was up in Toronto recording TV episodes for what's basically the Canadian equivalent to Dancing With the Stars except they do ice skating instead of ballroom dancing.

Belak also resigned with the Predators to continue his radio and TV announcing jobs from last season.

So from the outside, it looked like he was staying busy and things were going OK.

Yeah Belak was scheduled to appear on Battle Of The Blades. He seemed like a real happy guy to me.

Can we get rid of fighting now? Or at the very least, get rid of goons in the sport?
How many deaths before everyone gets their heads out of the sand and realizes that there's a correlation between fighting, concussions, depression, substance abuse and suicide?

What fan/human being really wants to see things stay status quo? Is watching two goons arrange fights on Twitter really worth all of this?????

                    ENOUGH ALREADY!

                      BRAVO!

Unfortunately i think it's going to take a Bill Masterton like moment before any REAL change happens to the game of hockey as it's played in the NHL.

But WHY is fighting leading to these things? Physical toll? Mental toll of being a "fighter" only?

I think it's a combination of a few things such as the players being much bigger and stronger causing more damage. Plus you don't know what they are putting in their bodies to fight pain and to get bigger and stronger. Stress I think affects them mentally as they worry about who they have to fight and of the outcome of their fights. If a fighter doesn't feel like he is doing his job properly he may worry about being replaced as they become more expendable. I do think fighting will be abolished sooner than later and more incidents like this will speed that discussion up. Also the NHL is trying to solve their concussion problems and for them to keep fighting any longer they would seem like hypacrite's.

                            I guess.

Still don't believe it's anywhere near an excuse to do what he did and leave who he left behind.

Can't see the NHLPA signing off on ending fighting anytime soon. You're telling enforcers that in order to potentially save their lives, you're going to take away their jobs (and the accompanying 6-or-7 figure salaries). Might be the right thing to do, but the players affected won't think so.
