    2018-2019 World Juniors

Tournament starts in just over a week.

Canada hosting it this year in Vancouver/Victoria. Their history in these tournaments at home hasn't been as great as they have hoped. In the last 8 World Juniors in Canada, they've won 3 of them. 4 of those 5 losses had them lose to USA or Russia in the Gold Medal game.

Last time it was in Vancouver, Canada won gold behind star goalie Justin Pogge and leading scorer Blake Comeau. USA had some kid named Kessel, and Russia had some kid named Malkin in that tournament.

We'll see if this new trend of new winners every year continues. Last 9 tournaments we haven't had a repeat winner. And the past 5 tournaments had no defending champ make it to the gold medal game the following year.

    Notable Matchups: (EST)
    December 26:
    USA-Slovakia, 630pm
    Canada-Denmark, 8pm
    Finland-Sweden, 1030pm

    December 27:
    Canada-Switzerland, 8pm

    December 28:
    USA-Kazakhstan, 1030pm

    December 29:
    Canada-Czech, 8pm
    USA-Sweden, 1030pm

    December 31:
    Canada-Russia, 8pm
    USA-Finland, 1030pm

    January 2 is Quarterfinals
    January 4 is Semifinals
    January 5 is Finals

I remember watching that tournament and thinking the Leafs had a dynamite goalie prospect on their hands -- Tuukka Rask.

I was at the US/Russia semifinal. Started a couple "US SUCKS" chants and mercilessly heckled Glen Sather (who was sitting a few rows down). Probably not a coincidence that was the most drunk I've ever been at a game.

I'll take a 14-0 win featuring two hat tricks.

I'm probably the only one who'll miss Canada's goal song from last year. Also, I don't find Pitbull as a good hockey goal song.

Haha, the US came back from down 4-0 to Sweden in the 3rd period to tie it 4-4.

Woah Canada and Sweden out in the quarters.

Finland out-Canada'd with their style of play.

BTW, is it bad of me to say that watching our 'captain' fail on the penalty shot is a lessen in karma.
Dude spent the entire tournament diving any chance he could.

One advantage to Canada laying an egg in the quarters: ticket prices for the gold medal game dropped to 50 bucks on StubHub (the cheapest were $280 before Canada was ousted), so I'm going to FIN/USA tomorrow.
