Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Utah hired Mike Babcock apparently (not actually).

They're asking draft prospects for their uber passenger rating as part of their draft interviews.

Draft interviews as a whole are just messed up that teams can ask players the most random thing. IIRC, the NFL has had some fairly controversial ones more than other sports.

Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Jackets and Laine are parting ways. He has 2 years 8.7m left so it'll be tough to trade given he hasn't played over 60 games since the trade, and was out last year due to the player assistance stuff.

At the time of the deal he was a 60+ point guy. He's gotten better in Columbus but how much do you think he'll play?

Jets turned PLD into Vilardi, other guys and a 2nd this year. But tough to say who really won the deal.

Can't see how the Jackets accomplish this without taking on another boat anchor contract in return. From their perspective, it makes much more sense to take your punishment and ride out the last couple of seasons. If Laine does move... well, given his personal issues, Utah might be his best bet.

It's probably easier "riding it out" with his cap hit on the books while you get picks or prospects for him.

8 x 7.25M for Hronek in Vancouver.

That's...something, I guess.

It's about what I expected. No Canadian team is ever going to receive a "hometown discount". Most likely all of Vancouver's key free agents (Lindholm, Joshua, Zadorov) are going to walk. The only other D-men currently under contract are Hughes, Soucy, and Noah Juulsen. I don't think Hronek's a true 2D, but are the Canucks going to find a better RD for less, especially with cap going up? I doubt it.

That's why the NHL cap system is broken.

By making it a hard cap you're just anchoring the teams who are already at a disadvantage.
