Penn State was kickstarted by Terry Pegula, Penn State alum, natural gas multimillionaire, and owner of the Sabres and Bills. He dumped a crap-load of money into the program - we're talking over $100 million altogether for stadium and facilities. So they were able to attract recruits right away to compete at the D1 level. Then they schedule awful non-conference games and play in a crappy conference where a couple powers are currently down, so they win games. It also helped that they already had a very high level club team in place. So there was already a base hockey culture there, and they get good attendance with an enthusiastic crowd.

Michigan's program is in a Paterno situation (minus decades of covering for a pedophile). Until Red moves on, they'll be stagnant.

Denver player just snapped his ankle in half going into the boards. His foot was dangling there like a salami in a deli.

Gruesome.

Glad I was too far away to see what was going on there.

Really good game. I wasn't that upset to lose that final, as I thought they were the better team. Though UMD hung right with them and completely dominated the 3rd period. It's too bad they got caught sleeping for the 2nd quick goal to make it 2-0.

Oh, and Red Berenson has decided to stop holding the Michigan program hostage.

MSU reportedly hiring Danton Cole as their next coach.

I wonder how much of a dog and pony show U-M will put on before tapping Mel Pearson.

I was at the Wild game in Phoenix, and the result got ruined for us so we didn't really get to watch it on DVR, but we did watch most of the last 2 periods just for the hell of it. Those 2 quick goals reminded me of the Gophers giving up 3 in a minute or two to Union in the championship game a few years ago.

Those lapses in concentration can be so damaging, and you got the sense that it was going to be really tough to come back from that (although maybe my view was skewed because we actually knew that they hadn't, lol)

Credit to them though, they didn't let it get out of hand and hung with them. Denver seemed like one of the best 3 teams all year, definitely a deserved champion.
