NHL 2021 Offseason

For most of the league, it's already the offseason.

This is sure to be another crazy offseason.

Cap staying the same despite almost 1B in TV revenue.

We also have Seattle entering the league and a fun expansion draft coming up.

Also have the most unpredictable entry draft in NHL history.

And we also have a number of big FA, some will probably stay where they are (like Ovechkin), and other big names could go elsewhere (Hall, Getzlaf, Rask, Stastny).

Oilers have also said they wouldn't rule out a buyout (aka James Neal). Like some other teams, I'd guess they'll wait and see what Seattle does first and see if Seattle takes a big money guy, or if the asking price to take a big money guy is more worth it than being on the hook for the buyout cap.

How about Marner/Seth Jones? Apparently Seth Jones wants out...

A top 4 with Rielly,Brodie,Muzzin,Jones would be deadly.

And Jones would cost less than Marner. That money alone could be used on another top 6 forward.

See, that might be doable, assuming Toronto is willing to pay Columbus as much of Marner's salary as possible and is willing to live with the fact that Jones could bolt next summer.

EDIT: Hmmm, I notice that more than 90% of the Marner's salary is via massive signing bonuses. Is Toronto allowed to eat a percentage of that?

We're almost done with the forever retained cap on Kessel, doing it for Marner now when the cap won't be going up will suck too.

But they can retain salary. And dealing him after that years signing bonus kicks in is 1 year less money that a team would need to worry about in a trade.

Too bad NHL won't ever have luxury tax. If they're not raising the cap, why not have the luxury tax.

Right, but Marner's salary is NHL minimum 700K. Would the Jackets on the hook for all the bonuses once he's been dealt?
