Re: NHL 2018 Off-Season Thread

Carlson is a guy who can get you 23 minutes a night on average while playing both PP and PK. Leafs badly need a guy like that. Unless some other option becomes available, they basically have to get Carlson or just hope a guy like Liljegren actually turns into a true 2nd overall worthy pick like he was projected for quite some time before last years draft.

Don't suppose Nashville is willing to give up Subban....

Here's something amusing I just found from last off-season.

Make sure to read the comments as well. Life comes at you fast, Albertans.

Avs have around 21 players signed and have 23M in cap space, and outside Rantanen, and maybe Barrie, they don't really have anyone important to re-sign for a lot of money in the near future while Sodaberg, Wilson, and Varlamov's expire soon so I have a feeling Sakic will do something really stupid this offseason.

Carlson is not that guy though. Going through the rate stats, Carlson is merely average in 5 on 5 play. On the PK, he is below average; his large amount of play time is more of an indictment of the rest of Washington's D than anything else. Carlson is excellent on the PP. I would argue that he isn't even Washington's best defenseman; Matt Niskanen is a better all around player than Carlson. While I wouldn't put signing Carlson past previous Leafs' FOs, this one seems to know what they are doing, and will probably steer clear.

Yes, I see the knives are out. Pittsburgh must have the worst hockey media south of the 49th parallel.

"Kessel is selfish for playing all 82 games (while finishing 7th in league scoring with 92 points) and not resting up for the playoffs!1!" is a weapons-grade hot take.

I also love the breathless "But who would take him at 6.8M???" (as the Sharks give out a 7/49 contract to Evander "I get injured all the time, score 55 points when healthy, and am a POS" Kane)

Local Pittsburgh Media is brutal.

Also. They wouldn’t have to pay 6.8. A team would be just on the hook for 4.8 I do believe. Since the Leafs ate 2 million basically.

Re: NHL 2018 Off-Season Thread

Kessels original cap hit is 8m. Leafs on hook for 1.2M(sucks they had to, but I'm sure being on hook for that much allowed them to get a better draft pick in the deal which they later packed to get Andersen). Assuming Pens don't retain anything, whoever gets Kessel will have 6.8m cap hit.

Preds might trade PK as well. Kessel for Subban?

If those Subban rumors are actually true, then forget about trying for Carlson and go after Subban instead!
