Sharks are a team I think should be looking ahead to the future.

Thornton,Ward likely moving on this offseason, and next year with UFAs like Pavelski,Couture,Martin. If I were them, I'd take a step back. No 1st rounder next year because of the Kane deal, would easily get multiple 1sts when dealing Couture/Pavelski. And no 2nd/3rd this year either.

If they wanted to take a step back no way they would've signed Kane to the deal they just did.

Kane will be part of the team long term. Taking a step back doesn't mean going the Sabres way of doing things. Just means a "quick rebuild". They had guys like Hertl,Tierny,Lablanc,Meier putting up good numbers offensively.

Pavelskis numbers are slowly going down and will obviously continue as he gets into his mid 30s. If you can deal him now or by the deadline and get a 1st round pick + more, then why not? And Couture, him expiring next year, it wouldn't be bad idea dealing him either. If he might stay in San Jose, then him being traded and then re-signed next year would be a double plus for them. If he wants to go elsewhere, then you might as well deal him over letting him walk for nothing.

Pirere McGuire said on Mark Maddens show today that his sources are saying that GMJR is “big game hunting” in the trade market.

Re: NHL 2018 Off-Season Thread

Less than 2 weeks until the draft. Now with cup finals over, offseason can really begin. Should be fun to see what moves get made. Obviously you hear the rumors with the big names, and most times those guys don't actually go anywhere.

Anyone want to make a guess on which team is the first to make a big offseason transaction? Pens with Kessel, Islanders deal Tavares rights, Preds deal Subban, Sens deal Karlsson, something else?

I don't think you sign a guy to a contract that large with his history of locker room/off ice issues, one 30 goal season, and history of injuries if you take a step back.

Kane is the kind of player you gamble on with that contract if you're aiming to keep your window open.
