In a game that was MUCH closer than the final score indicated, Buffalo was able to unleash their passing game to secure the 41-21 win over their conference rival Western Michigan.
The battle between 6-1 MAC teams got off to a bad start for Buffalo as Western Michigan and HB James Beard had their way with the Bull defense en route to an easy TD. Beard had 50 yards on 5 carries on that drive. On the ensuing possession, freshman QB DJ Cook threw an interception on his very 1st pass of the game that was returned to the 1 yard line. 3 plays later, the Broncos were up 14-0. Buffalo was able to string together a long drive of their own; however, they were stalled inside the 5 and opted to kick the short FG.
After forcing a punt, Buffalo was able to cap off their ensuing drive with a 3 yard TD to freshman WR Adam Russell to cut the lead to 14-10. WMU answered back with a TD of their own to extend it back to 21-10 with 1:54 to go in the half.
Knowing they would get the ball back after halftime, the Bulls still needed to try and put some points on the board before the half to try and cut it to one score. Freshman HB Corey Neal was able to punch in a 1 yard score with only 17 seconds left to do just that and go into the locker rooms with the score 21-17 Western Michigan lead.
The Bulls offense has been paced primarily by the running game this season, but the Bronco defense completely took it away from them in this game and forced DJ Cook to put the ball in the air, which is something he has struggled with at times this season. He had the early gaffe in the game throwing the pick, but would he be able to effectively lead the Bulls to victory in the 2nd half?
Buffalo opened the quarter with a long, methodical drive that ate up over 5 minutes of clock, before Cook found Russell for a 4 yard score, their 2nd TD connection on the day, giving the Bulls their 1st lead of the day at 24-21.
Knowing the potency that the Bronco attack could have, it was important for the Buffalo D to answer with a stop. They were able to do just that and give their offense a chance to make it a two possession game. The Bulls moved the ball well yet again, but faltered in the red zone for the 2nd time on the day and were forced to kick a 27 yard FG, extending their lead to only 6.
Then, big play freshman CB Michael Armstrong answered the call.
On the Broncos first play from scrimmage following the FG, Armstrong stepped in front of a screen pass and took it 24 yards to the house for the momentum changing play of the game! That gave Buffalo a 34-21 lead with 6:50 remaining.
Armstrong wasn't done though. On the following Bronco drive, on 3rd and long, WMU tested armstrong again, but he swatted it to the ground to give the ball back to the Buffalo offense. The Bulls tacked on another TD to make it 41-21. Armstrong deflected 3 more passes over the last drive for WMU and the D forced a turnover on downs to effectively end the game.
