Madden is a dumpster dive, so I say NFL 2K. Then NCAA football, followed by 2K college hoops.

i still play this mode too. if 2k had included this mode in APF 2K8, it would be awesome, especially with the editors and modding that is going on now. yeah, it's the purest way...

NFL Pro 2013 by Game Loft is arcadey but decent. Free but pay to upgrade like most games are today.
