Creating a Sim Gameplay Environment
We are a sim-oriented, gentlemen's league, and I want to say a few words to the league about creating a sim environment in our league games.
We have restarted so that the new patch will be in effect for all of our league games. That said, the responsibility is still on us to create a sim game environment. I'm going to list off some things that we need to consider if we are to make good in practice our claims in theory to be a sim league.
Run to Pass Ratio
In his stat sheet, SB has compiled actual run and pass percentages for each team from the 2009 season. The columns with the percentages are labelled NFL Run and NFL Pass. Adjacent to them are ACQB Run and ACQB Pass, which show where we stand relative to actual trends.
Those stats aren't the be all and end all, but they raise an important point. If we want to be a sim league, owners should be mindful of how unrealistic it is to pass or run 70% of the time. I won't handcuff owners by percentages, but owners cannot complain about insane stats if they choose to pass all game or run all game.
Varied Attacks
Realistic rushing attacks mix inside runs with outside runs. Nobody runs all tosses or sweeps, or all dives for that matter. Teams mix their runs and so should we. If you can get 10 yards a pop off a certain formation, don't run it but once or twice a game. Take pride in realistic variety; it's worth more long term than bloated stats.
Realistic passing attacks use more routes than the slant, drag and streak. If we want balance, we need to throw all manner of routes at all different depths, and we should aim for the most part to make our leading receivers actual receivers, not running backs and tight ends.
Realistic defensive attacks mix coverages, don't over blitz, and don't go recklessly for hit sticks and ball strips. Those things contribute to too many big plays and inflate offensive statistics. They don't press all game, they don't man up all game, they don't zone up all game.
All of these things are contextual, but we need to be mindful of these basic principles. If we really want to put our money where our mouths are, we'll strive to make our game experiences as realistic as possible. More realistic stats are best for the league, and playing a balanced game makes for a better overall experience for our owners and for our opponents as well.
