Browns Upset 49ers 39-37
Turnovers Prove to be the Difference

Browns Safety TJ Ward was on the prowl all day forcing 2 fumbles

Late in the fourth quarter, when the Browns were winning the turnover margin by +3 and trailing, there was a ton of confusion going on in Believeland. In the first half, the Browns had forced 4 turnovers (3 fumbles, 1 INT) yet only had 15 points to show for it 5 Alex Henery field goals.

"We knew coming in they had one of the better defenses in the SFL," said Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden, "but I didn't know they were that good. We couldn't get the run going, and early on the passing game was bad too."

The passing game suffered early on, and the pass defense wasn't much better. Colin Kaepernick threw for 360 yards, and completed plenty of bombs all day including a 52 yard completion to rookie Jerome Somerville (2 catches 61 yards), a 49 yard pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey (4 catches 104 yards), and a 66 yard completion to Vernon Davis (6 catches 150 yards).

Not to be outdone, Weeden found his go to guy Travis Benjamin 6 times for 138 yards. New addition Braylon Edwards caught a 59 yard bomb which was followed by a dougie, which turned out to be the winning score.

Although both the offense and defense had their bright spots in the game, neither group had much consistency on the day and that's what Coach Mitch will push for next week against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts.

Stats:
Brandon Weeden 20/37 353 Yards 3 TDs 1 INT
Trent Richardson 16 Carries 22 Yards
Travis Benjamin 6 Catches 138 Yards 1 TD
Jabaal Sheard 3 Tackles 2 Sacks 1 FF
TJ Ward 8 Tackles 2 FF

Browns Go Aerial on Colts
Weeden Throws for 416 Yards in Victory

Chicks Were Digging Brandon Weeden's Long Ball All Day (Pause)

Two minutes into this game Brandon Weeden found Braylon Edwards deep for an 80 yard touchdown, and that was the story of the day for the Browns.

"There was only one safety back, Zbikowski, on a lot of their defensive plays." Weeden explained. "I mean, that's like playing with fire against this team, Braylon [Edwards] can run, Travis [Benjamin] can definitely run. I wanted David [Gettis] and Josh [Gordon] to get in on the fun but I wasn't that fortunate."

For Weeden and his Browns, the play action worked all day.

Although Weeden completed just 44% of his passes, it was one of his better games as a pro. Weeden still needs touching up on his short and intermediate throws, as many were erratic. But Weeden was like Ray Allen from downtown today, butter baby.

The Browns scored on 3 touchdown passes that were 80 yards or longer, two which were thrown to Weeden's favorite target: Travis Benjamin.

The sophomore duo of Weeden and Benjamin only connected twice today for 167 yards and a third pass was overthrown as Benjamin was open yet again.

"On the first touchdown, Pat Angerer was lined up across from me and the whole time I'm sitting there chuckling. It was kinda like child's play. Dude had no chance and I didn't even kick it into second gear at all." Explained Benjamin. "There wasn't safety help over the top all day. It was easy money."

Easy Money is probably one of the better ways to explain the Browns' 58-21 victory in which the defense forced Andrew Luck into 4 interceptions and 17/45 passing.

Stats:
Brandon Weeden 13/29 419 Yards 6 TDs 1 INT
Trent Richardson 29 Carries 126 Yards
Travis Benjamin 2 Catches 167 Yards 2 TDs
Braylon Edwards 4 Catches 172 Yards 2 TDs
Thomas Howard 7 Tackles 1 INT 3 Deflections

Weeden, Newman win AFC Players of the Week
Browns Sweep Weekly Awards After Big Win

In what was probably Coach Mitch's signature win in an average coaching stint, it was only right to get at least one player of the week. But, for the Browns to have two players of the week puts the icing on what was already a tasty cake.

This is 29-year old Brandon Weeden's first ever Player of the Week award, and after receiving his trophy gave all the credit to those around him.

"This one goes out to the receivers for running great routes this week, the offensive linemen were far more physical and did a good job keeping me clean, but this also goes out to Coach Mitch. Just his faith in me, letting me come out here and make the throws I know I can make, especially after throwing 31 picks last year, it means a lot."

Weeden is only a sophomore in NFL years, and despite his age, he looks to be the franchise quarterback the Browns have sought after for years.

On the other side of the football, cornerback Terence Newman won AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

"Didn't really do anything special," said Newman. "Caught a pick, took it to the casa. Recovered a fumble. All in a days work I guess. I'm thankful for the award though."

After the conclusion of Week 2, Newman is tied for 1st in the SFL in interceptions with 2 while playing the role of Nickel Corner for the Browns.

The Browns must now turn their attention to the high scoring Houston Texans in what looks to be a shootout.

Browns Survive Shootout in Houston
Defensive Pick Sixes Push Browns Ahead

Travis Benjamin registers another big game.

If you're a fan of high scoring, gun slinging football games, then the Browns-Texans matchup was a treat. Unfortunately, Browns Head Coach Mitch prefers ugly, low scoring dogfights.

"The defense let me down today. I know the excuse is 'Oh they threw the ball 60 times' but that's not good enough. How we let Schaub throw for almost SIX HUNDRED YARDS is unexplainable."

To make up for all of the passing yards allowed though, newly acquired Cassius Vaughn and Terence Newman both caught interceptions which were returned for touchdowns. Vaughn's 69 yard pick six with 2:56 left in the first quarter is what broke the 0-0 tie. Newman's 64 yard pick six with 1:17 left in the fourth is what effectively ended the game.

Along with the 14 points the defense provided, the offense put up 28 points, including 3 touchdown passes from Brandon Weeden. The biggest touchdown pass was a 72 yard bomb to none other than Travis Benjamin just 4 seconds before halftime to give the Browns a 21-17 lead going into the break.

The Texans played a Mike Leach Texas Tech type of game though, as Schaub went 35/59 with 558 yards passing, but threw 4 interceptions to go along with 3 touchdown passes.

Stats:
Brandon Weeden 13/20 364 Yards 3 TDs 2 INTs
Trent Richardson 19 Carries 48 Yards 1 TD
Travis Benjamin 6 Catches 175 Yards 1 TD
David Gettis 1 Catch 84 Yards 1 TD
Terence Newman 8 Tackles 1 INT 1 TD
Cassius Vaughn 5 Tackles 1 INT 1 TD

Newman Wins Second Consecutive AFC Defensive Player of the Week
Game Clinching Pick Six Propels Newman to Award

"I'm like Dwight Howard out here" explained Browns cornerback Terence Newman at his most recent AFC Player of the Week post conference. "These teams in the SFL love to throw to their slot guys, wait no, they love to throw to me. It's all good though, I love catching picks. I love juking those offensive linemen too. Life is good baby, I should have come to Believeland earlier in my career."

This week, in a 42-37 victory over the Houston Texans, Newman caught a 64 yard pick six to go along with 8 tackles to earn his second consecutive AFC Defensive Player of the Year. At the close of week three, Newman leads the SFL in defensive touchdowns and is tied for the SFL in interceptions.

When asked if he should be moved up the depth chart over Rashean Mathis who also caught a pick in the victory, Newman said this: "'Shean is my dude, but we go at it every day in practice jawing at each other. He knows I'm hungry and gunning for his spot, but I love covering slot guys, I get a ton of throws coming my way so I can catch a lot of picks. There's no reason I can't win defensive player of the year at this rate."

Newman will look to keep his streak alive as the Browns face division rival Pittsburgh Steelers this week.
