Titan Extra: Pre-Season Edition

Nashville -- Heading into Season 2 of the SFL, folks in Nashville have a reason to be optimistic about their Tennessee Titans. Head Coach Droopy Johnson took over and went 5-3, and got the Titans headed in the right direction. Here's a look at the Titans roster preview:

Quarterback- Jake Locker, Kevin Kolb
After cutting Matt Hasselbeck in the offseason, this is Jake Locker's team. Folks in TitanTown are expecting big things from the 3rd year pro. Kolb was brought in knowing he would strictly be a back up, and he accepted the role. The QB position has had question marks in past seasons, but Locker has cemented himself as the unquestioned leader.

Running Back- Chris Johnson, Javon Ringer, Darius Reynauld Fullbacks- Quinn Johnson, Craig Stevens
Of course Titans fans are stoked about the running game; CJ2K is back to lead the way on the ground for the Titans. Johnson led the SFL in rushing, and after a tad bit of controversy, people may finally know he got his yards legitly. The threat of Johnson helps the Titans passing game tremendously, and Coach Johnson hopes to use C.J in the passing game more this season. Ringer re-signed in the offseason, and the Titans are looking to get Reynauld more involved in the offense as well. Quinn Johnson blocked well for C.J, and the Titans resigned him in the offseason. Stevens is a hybrid FB/TE who the Titans hope to utilize more in the passing game.

Receivers- Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, Kendall Wright, Damian Williams
This is the key position that will make or break the Titan offense this season. Britt is the top guy, with all the tools to be an elite WR. Will this be the season it all comes together? Washington is still a solid #2, but the WR with all eyes on him is Wright. He has the speed and acceleration to make the difference, he just has to be consistent. Folks were raving about Williams in the offseason, and the coaching staff expects him to step up this season.

Tight End- Jared Cook, Ben Watson, William Milhollin
TE is another key position, and the Titans have a stud in Jared Cook. Cookie gets open, catches the ball, and is a top target for Locker. After that it gets iffy. Taylor Thompson dropped alot of balls last season, and after having 3 drops in a pre-season game, the Titans had enough: Thompson was cut. Watson was brought in through free agency, and the veteran TE hopes to make an impact. Milhollin was a free agent pickup who has the size and skill to develop, but will he is the question. Craig Stevens can also be in the mix.

The O-Line: Michael Roos, Steve Hutchinson, Fernando Velasco, Fenuki Tupou, Dave Stewart
The oline is a strength of the Titans. The Bookend Boys, Roos and Stewart, are top flight tackles. Hutchinson is a solid vet who held his own. Tupou was brought in to replace Leroy Harris, and the jury is still out on Velasco.

The D-Line:Kamerion Wimbley, Derrick Morgan, Albert Haynesworth, Pat Sims, Jurrell Casey

The Titans really looked to upgrade this position in the offseason. Haynesworth is back, where many feel he belongs. Sims was also brought in to beef up the interior, and Casey is a rising talent. Wimbley and Morgan are back as the starters, and Shawn Merriman was brought in to be the situational pass rusher.

LineBackers: Akeem Ayers, Colin McCarthy, Will Witherspoon, Zach Brown

The up and coming LB squad is a plus for the Titans. Ayers is the talented one. Many people expect him to have a break out year. McCarthy led the team in tackles, but seems to not play to his abilities. Witherspoon is a solid vet in the twilight of his career, but still puts up solid numbers. Brown is the future at ROLB, and it won't be long before he takes over the spot from Witherspoon.

Cornerback: Jason McCourty, Alterrraun Verner, Brandon Ghee, Tommie Campbell

In the pass happy SFL, this is the crucial position for the Titans. McCourty makes the big bucks, and its time for his play to match. Verner is versatile; he can play in the slot and even slide to the safety spot. Every one is waiting for Campbell to break out, and he has the tools to do so. Ghee was brought in due to his physical play, and he hopes to nail down the nickel back spot.

Safeties : Michael Griffin, Jordan Babineaux, Markelle Martin, Al Afalava
Griffin is the leader of the secondary. With that being said, the Titans are looking for him to be consistent. J-Bab is solid, yet unspectacular, but he gets the job done. The Titans are high on the development of Martin, who is a ballhawk and loves the big hit.

Special Teams: K Rob Bironas, P Brett Kern, KR/PR Marc Mariani
Bironas is aging, but his leg hasn't lost any strength. Kern directional punts very well, and keeps the ball away from the deadly returners of the league. The Titans are happy to have Mariani back from injury, and Darius Reynauld is also a deadly weapon in the return game.

The Rookies:
CB Shawn Campbell/ RG Jamaan Watts/ LE T.J Blake/ MLB Thomas Barnard
The Titans took Campbell with the 13th pick in the draft. Campbell is the future, and the Titans will bring him along slowly and let him develop. He is very smart and plays the ball well, but must improve his physical traits.
Blake wowed the Titan scouts with his speed and acceleration, and it won't be long before he is a starter. He led Boise St. in sacks, double digits, three straight years.
Watts was drafted to be groomed as the future at RG. He has the physical tools to be a solid pro. If Tupou falters, Jamaan could be thrown in the mix.
T-Barn comes to the Titans from Georgia Tech, and the Titans were happy he was on the board in the 4th round. He's had a great camp, and if McCarthy doesn't watch out, Barnard could be cutting into his minutes real soon.

Well, there you have it. The in depth preview of the Tennessee Titans for SFL Season 2. This team could be a sleeper pick to make the playoffs, but the main focus is to contend for the AFC South Championship. Check back soon for more TITAN EXTRA !
