Panthers Total Access

Welcome to the first entry into Panthers Total Access! It may be early, but now the player ratings are available, I can give you guys my take on the team.

QB: Cam Newton is the undisputed starter and is the biggest weapon in the Panther’s offense. Cam will get his share of carries, but we’ll be looking for him to make big plays in the passing game. Look for Cam to throw for over 3,500 yards and 20 TD’s while having over 300 on the ground.

HB/FB: There’s a lot of depth and diversity in the backfield. Kenjon Barner and Jonathan Stewart will split carries and Mike Tolbert will steal some carries away from them near the goal line and in short yardage situations. DeAngelo Williams will most likely be the guy left out of the loop since he is over-paid and 30 years old.

WR/TE: Not exactly the strength of the Panthers, but the receiving corp does feature the aging number one option in the passing game, Steve Smith. He’s still a great player and will be the guy that Cam looks to get the football to first. Brandon LaFell has solid ratings and should be a third wheel for Newton. Ted Ginn has a lot of speed and will be productive on special teams, the question is how will he perform in the slot. Greg Olsen will be the secondary option at the TE position and should make a lot of plays for us this season.

OL: This unit is decent, but not great. The O-Line features LT Jordan Gross who is still a good player, but his AARP card should be arriving in the mail any day now. Ryan Kalil is a solid center and the group is rounded out by youngsters LG Amini Silatolu and RT Byron Bell.

DL: Probably the strongest unit in terms of positions on the Panthers. The defensive line features two book ends (Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy) that are not overly fast, but are pretty strong and have great power moves for their position. Rookies Star Lotulelei and Kawaan Short will great in run defense and putting pressure on the QB. The D-Line has great depth with backups Frank Alexander, Mario Addison and Dwan Edwards being solid players. This group should be able to put a lot of pressure on the QB by themselves and put up some great sack numbers (pause).

LB: This group is pretty solid and is lead by MLB Luke Kuechly who is the ideal MLB in just about every system. Strong against the run and great against the pass, Kuechly will be a great player for the Panthers for years to come. Jon Beason is a solid player despite injuries in the past few seasons, he’ll most likely move over to the LOLB position. Thomas Davis is currently the starter at ROLB, but his spot is by no means secure as he is 30 and injury prone. Look for Jason Williams and A.J. Klein to challenge him for that spot.

CB/S: The weakest part of the Panthers is the secondary. None of the CB’s are ideal for the system we’re looking to run. We’ll sacrifice speed at the CB position for taller corners who can press and play zone. Charles Godfrey looks promising as the FS and Mike Mitchell is currently ahead in the competition for the starting SS job.

K/P: Who cares! Strong leg is all that’s needed.

The outcome of the season depends on the play of Cam Newton and how well the secondary holds up for this first year. The playoffs are in reach and hopefully a championship will be within our crosshairs in a few years.

Tentative Trading Block:
RB DeAngelo Williams
LT Jordan Gross
OLB Thomas Davis

Needs:
CB
S
WR
OL
We’ll see you next time in a couple of weeks for regular updates on the Carolina Panthers!

Breaking News: Richardson sells out to Super and the MITF

The breaking news in the SFL is Carolina Panthers owner selling his team to SuperSeahawks and the Make It Rain Foundation, the only for-profit charity in the world. The Panthers were acquired for $300 billion Make-It-Rain dollars. The Foundation will split its focus towards to the Panthers, while keeping the exchange of $1 bills to aspiring pimps. SuperSeahawks will be the Coach and GM; he also did this press release:

"This is a great oppurtunity for myself and my foundation. We have a few budding stars and potentially a mega star in Cam Newton. We'll be running the Tampa 2 on defense, while on offense we have a few playbooks/schemes to experiment with. We're excited about the young players that we have and the guys that we want to bring into the Panther family. Hopefully someday we can bring the Lombardi trophy back to Carolina on a float filled with Flavor Flav impersonators."

We'll see you next time for more updates of the Carolina Panthers and the Make It Rain Foundation.

Re: Panthers Total Access

Training Camp with SuperSeahawks

Q: We are live with the Panthers new head coach SuperSeahawks who is at the Carolina headquarters in Charlotte, how it's going Super?

A: Good man. The players are training hard, and more importantly, are partying hard as well.

Q: Who's paying for these parties?

A: The Foundation, the players have to know what it feels like to make it rain in order to be successful.

Q: How's training camp going?

A: Changing the subject I see....anyway that's going fine as we evaluate our players in practice and in scrimmages against other teams.

Q: How do the Panthers stack up to those other teams?

A: Pretty well I'd say; we've been competitive in every ball game we've been in. We haven't won them all, but who cares it's preseason football!

Q: Who's stood out so far in camp?

A: On offense, the former 3rd string RB Kenjon Barner has earned more reps after each practice. His speed and elusiveness are something that the defense will have to account for; he'll most likely get the majority of the carries in this offense. On defense, Robert Lester has impressed me so far. He's forced turnovers, is a solid tackler, and hasn't made huge mistakes. If he is able to make the final roster, he'll have the upper hand in getting the starting SS job. Ted Ginn has been ballin' on Special Teams; he's been flashy on kickoff and punt return duties and can help set up the offense in the opponent's territory.

Q: Anybody else make an impact so far?

A: The defense goes through MLB Luke Kuechly; he's been a monster in run defense and has been played his deep zone coverage responsibilities in the Tampa 2 marvelously and has created several turnovers. The safeties have played better than I was expected with Robert Lester who we spoke of earlier and Charles Godfrey who has been looking like a poor man's Earl Thomas. On offense, Cam Newton has been the big play maker in the running game and through the air. His running abilities are well known, but he's been pinpoint with his passes for the most part so far. If he can keep that play up, expect some fireworks from Charlotte. He also has a few guys to throw to; Steve Smith and Greg Olsen are the obvious choices, but Brandon LaFell has stepped up as a solid number 2 WR.

Q: There have been rumors that DeAngelo Williams is on the way out...is it true?

A: I can honestly say that those "rumors'' are....completely true! He's a prima donna little b****. He's over-paid and soft (pause). Once the SFL goes live, he'll be gone.

Q: Any free agency news?

A: I wouldn't list names, but there are a few names on the market that we like. One or two of them stand out as guys we may have to pick up on waivers, the rest will fly under the radar and we'll pick them up afterwards.

Q: Anything else Super?

A: GO PANTHERS!!!!

Q: That's it from Charlotte, good night.

Re: Panthers Total Access

The Carolina Panthers have made a couple of moves in Free Agency in order to bolster the depth and talent on the team. As promised, we cut DeAngelo Williams only after a few hours of signing into the league; here's a breakdown of our Free Agent Signees:

RB Damien Berry- Berry is a strong runner; he has a strength rating of 76, 92 carrying and 87 trucking. He may not be overly fast, but he'll be a great complement to Kenjon Barner in the backfield.

WR Raymond Radway- Radway has good size (6'3'' 193) and great speed (94 speed and 95 acceleration). He's a developmental guy at the moment, because he needs to improve his intelligence, hands and route running.

RT Max Starks- Starks is a veteran of the league and we'll look for him to shore the RT position. He'll be a starter for this year and we look for him to play well with his 92 strength and 82 pass blocking.

LOLB Aaron Maybin- this is the first guy we wanted and were fortunate to get him. He's pretty fast off the edge and can make an impact on 3rd down by coming off the edge (89 acceleration, 94 finesse move) and getting to the QB. However, we may look at him to play some OLB and act like a Peter Boulware type of player.

MLB Brian Banks- a great story and a great comeback from his ordeal. He's the kind of guy you want on your football team and we hope that we can find a role for him.

CB Neiko Thorpe- A cornerback with good size and good speed, but will need to sit on the bench for a year or two and learn the game.

SS Robert Sands- This is the guy that we wanted the most and took a slight risk in not picking him up off waivers. Our scouts have said that "Sands can be the next Kam Chancellor at safety". If you look him profile, you'll see why. Sands is 6'4'' 209lbs, decent speed at 84, great pursuit at 87, hit power of 88 and 71 catching. He'll be an immediate starter and even though he's young and raw, on-field experience will do him some good.

We'll see you next time for more Panthers Total Access!

Re: Panthers Total Access

The pre-season is finally over for the Panthers, and it's time to look forward to the regular season which starts with us hosting the Seattle Seahawks. This pre-season saw some guys emerge and earn their spots on the roster while other players revealed team weaknesses that need to be addressed.

  • Dennis Dixon was a standout by being a good QB to run the read option, being able to escape the pocket with his legs and throw with some accuracy to his targets. He has earned a backup spot to Cam Newton in case he gets injured.
  • Raymond Radway had a few drops, but was also able to make some big plays happen in the passing game. Armanti Edwards also stepped up in the last game by being elusive and getting a lot of YAC.
  • Damien Berry showed some power in the running game.
  • Luke Kuechly despite playing only 2 quarters made his presence felt by forcing a turnover against the Steelers.
As you can see, there were more good things to say about the offense than the defense. We did have a problem with our rush defense and I hope that it is only a byproduct of having backups in the game for the majority of the pre-season, but it's something that we'll be paying attention to. We made a flurry of cuts and signings; about a 1/3 of the team was replaced/upgraded with guys that were cut off of other teams. Some of those guys were LT Chris Hairston, DT Chris Jones, OLB Ray Ray Armstrong, OLB Korey Toomer, and FS Cooper Taylor. The last three guys are the ones that we wanted the most.

OLB Ray Ray Armstrong is a former safety and from the University of Miami which was enough for me. OLB Korey Toomer was somebody that we tried to trade for, but we're lucky to get him off the streets; he has the physical ability to be the next Derrick Brooks. Cooper Taylor is a big safety at 6'4'' which is something that we look for in the secondary; he could make the switch to CB and become the next Jason Sehorn. That's all we got for this episode of Panthers Total Access, we'll see you next time for the season opener against the Seahawks!

Re: Panthers Total Access

Panthers upset Seahawks in home opener 36-24

There's nothing like opening day; the pagentry, the excitement, the leftover cocaine from the team's pep rally the night before. The Panthers and the Make It Rain Foundation kicked off another glorious season in the SFL by.... allowing a TD on the first drive of the game as the Seahawks were able to drive down the field with Lynch and Wilson. The drive ended with Russell Wilson keeping it on the read option and running for a 39 yard TD. SS Robert Sands was lost early in the game with an injury and will be lost for 7 weeks. Our offense started off slow, partly because of the lag (my fault) and the Seahawks killer defense. Cam started cold and it took the great play from the special teams and defense in order to help us get back in the game as they set up our offense in good field position which helped us kick two field goals to cut the deficit to 1.

(Kenjon Barner was able to break out for two long runs; he had 13 carries for 148 yards and 2 TD's to earn MVP of the game)

Marshawn Lynch made his presence known as he found a crease in our defense and scored from 23 yards out to make the score 14-6. This is where the offense started to heat up; Kenjon Barner was able to escape the first line of defense and run 57 yards into the red zone. This lead to Cam Newton beating the safety blitz and finding Steve Smith for a TD. We attempted a 2 point conversion and failed to make the score 17-12 at the half.

The game swung in our favor when the special teams forced Golden Tate to fumble a punt return which was subsequently recovered by Brian Banks. This led to two Kenjon Barner scoring runs with one of them being from 3 yards out and the other from about 40 yards out to help the Panthers gain the lead 26-17. The defense continued its strong play by putting pressure on Russell and bringing him down twice. We also forced another turnover when Luke Kuechly stepped in front of a Wilson pass and set us up in Seahawk territory. Cam made a great throw finding Greg Olsen in the seam in the back of the end zone for a TD. The defense gave up some ground and the Hawks were able to drive down and score to make it 36-24.

Thankfully, the running game kicked it into high gear with Tolbert and Berry gaining some tough yards. Cam broke the Seahawks backs with a PA roll out where he found Steve Smith by throwing across his body. We were able to run down the clock and win the game 36-24. GG to Tower, our next opponent is the Buffalo Bills. The lag was a killer though, so unless I can improve the connection, I may have to play games later on at night/ in the morning. Regardless, we'll see you next time for more Panthers Total Access!

Re: Panthers Total Access

Panthers sleepwalk out of Buffalo 14-3

(Cam Newton was under pressure early, but righted the ship by running for 81 yards and a TD to ground the Bills 14-3)

Neither offense came to play early in the first half as EJ Manuel threw an INT on the Bills first drive. However, Carolina failed to take advantage of this and punted the ball away. In fact, the offense looked like **** for the rest of the half and Cam threw 3 INT's and we were behind 3-0. However, the Carolina defense came to play by forcing EJ Manuel to throw 3 more INT's and the defense was able to keep the Bills under 175 of total offense.

The Panthers offense found a spark when Cam Newton kept it on a read option and ran 57 yards down the field which set up a Barner TD. Another INT by Manuel set up a Cam Newton TD run from 3 yards out. The Panthers held steady and left Buffalo with a 14-3 win. This was not a great showing from the passing game, but we did learn a lesson in not underestimating our opponent (Human or CPU). We'll see you next time as we host the Giants in Week 3!

Re: Panthers Total Access

Panthers hold on late to beat Giants 24-18

We knew going into the game that this was going to be a tough game and we had to start off fast. We took the football and proceeded to drive down the field with a balanced attack, culuminating with a Mike Tolbert TD run at the goal line to give us a 7-0 lead. The Giants drive ended pre-maturely with Josh Norman picking off an Eli Manning pass to set us up with decent field position. The Giants were able to drive down the field on us a few times, and their first trip into the redzone resulted in a TD to Henry Hynoski to tie the game up at 7. Our running game gained traction as Cam Newton escaped the pocket a few times to pick up some key yards. Tolbert ran it in for his 2nd TD to give us the lead again 14-7.

(Mike Tolbert pulled off the football hat trick, scoring 3 TD's from inside the five yard line)

New York was able to move the ball down the field and entered our redzone again, but this time were able to keep them out of the redzone and they took their 3 points and narrowed the deficit to 4 at the half. The 2nd half started off with Captain Munnerlyn picking off a pass and giving us decent field position. Cam made a big play in the passing game when he found Steve Smith singled up for 42 yards which set up the Mike Tolbert hat trick as he found the endzone for the 3rd time today and expanded our lead to 21-10. Eli Manning got hot, carving up our defense like thanksgiving dinner. The key to the game was our redzone defense as we made it difficult on the Giants, but they eventually broke through when Eli snuck it in from a yard out to make the score 21-18.

With only a few minutes left in the game and the score now 24-18. The Giants needed a drive and Eli put one together driving down onto the 10 yard line. The Panthers defense tightened up (pause) and kept them out of the endzone on 3 consecutive plays. On 4th down, the pass rush broke down and Eli tried to throw it to Victor Cruz, but the football met Munnerlyn's hands for the 2nd time and we took over from the 15. After burning all of their timeouts, the Giants looked to take the lead, but it wasn't to be as the pass defense shut them down and forced New York to turn it over on downs with the game ending with a Carolina victory 24-18.

It was a tough game and we were fortunate to hold to the win and improve our record to 3-0. We're on a bye next week and it's needed since Thomas Davis was lost with a torn meniscus. Our next opponent is Marvin and the Arizona Cardinals, we'll see you next time for more Panthers Total Access!
