yeah you're coaching strategy has a lot to do with recruiting, not how you played your previous season. My coaching strategy was leaning towards the running side after my first year of my dynasty and I got all kinds of interested blue chippers in HBs, but no WR. Well after my second year, all but one of my WR graduated so I knew I was gonna need more. Before the recruits were compiled and changed my strategy slider to 60% pass, now I had tons of WR interested and no blue chip HBs. I went on and signed 4 blue chipper WR. I was set on HBs from the previous year so I didn't get any of them since no real good ones were available. This is the same way it worked last year.

I also get better DBs when I have my defensive strategy set to conservative, then I get the better LB when I set it to aggressive.
