With Canadian rules and a Canadian field, an elite CFL team (ie, Warren Moon-era Eskimos, one of Flutie's mid-90's teams, etc.) would've been competitive, I think. CFL teams were much stronger in the 80s and 90s than they are now, because NFL GM's were much more prejudiced against smaller, quicker players than they are today.
BTW, exhibition games used to be played between NFL and CFL teams back in the 50's. Supposedly they played using a hybrid of US and Canadian rules.

This is interesting, I did not know these games were played.
By the way, don't be so hard on yourself about the Bills, it was only their 2nd year in existence when they lost that exhibition.
Ironically, Hamilton during that time, had accomplished a similiar Buffalo Bills' feat: Aside from being Grey Cup champs in 57, Hamilton lost the Grey Cup in 58, 59, 61, and 62.
