The Lakers and Celtics are the top teams historically but who comes next...
...in terms of cache? Im sure some of you have heard by now that the Celtics (16) and Lakers (14) account for roughly half of the NBAs 61 championships. I think the Bulls come next with 6. But we all know that it was driven by the GOAT. But the Bulls werent really a big factor before Jordan. There are some teams however, who have fewer titles but who have been a bigger factor more consistently throughout history, the Sixers for example. Who would you say comes after the Celtics and Lakers in the NBAs pecking order (historically)?Tags: None -

The Knicks, they're in the media capital of the world and when they were good they really were the engine that carried the league in terms of ratings. The NYC area is important in that regard.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Bulls, Sixers, Spurs, Pistons, Knicks (we're talking about succes not hype), Warriors, Rockets, Bullets, Sonics.-Rocky Balboa"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. Ok, my bad. Take the Philadelphia Warriors and 76ers off the list because of my avatar and that I'm from Philadelphia.
Let's just forget the Sixers have the third most wins in NBA history, both regular season and playoffs.
Forget all of that just because of my darn avatar.
I swear......Comment

Depends on how you want to go about it.
SA and Chicago certainly have the championship edge, but those are only based on 2 players. Outside of Duncan and MJ, they've been pretty bad.
The Sixers only have 2 chips, but did make 6 other Finals appearances, including 1 in every decade aside from the 90s.Comment

Im not good at debating on historical teams but I am somewhat surprised nobody has mentioned Utah, they have always been a solid team and have had a lot of success over the years. Its a tough call, New York has to be included, Portland was a real good team for a little while when Drexler was here but never got over the hump so I assume their one title in '77 doesnt get them on this list. Houston has to be included I would think as well for what they accomplished.Comment

Good call on Portland. They won a championship in the 70s, rose to prominence in the 80s with a different set of players and were a big factor in 2000 with yet another set of players. You sometimes wonder how the discussion would go if not for the Bulls of the 90s. Im fairly certain Seattle and Phoenix would have won a championship and Utah would have won 2. Maybe even the Knicks would have had one.Im not good at debating on historical teams but I am somewhat surprised nobody has mentioned Utah, they have always been a solid team and have had a lot of success over the years. I didnt realize that was required to be included in this discussion, it says the top teams historically, not the teams who have won the most titles. If we were doing this same debate in football, would anyone discount Buffalo for not winning a title even though they got there so many times and were proven to be a great team? Im not trying to come across as hostile, just wondering where the cut off is then, title or no title Utah is a really good team and has been really consistent, they deserve to be in the discussion but not near the top of the list.Comment
