Why Twelve is the Magic Number

Rob Fetter checks in today with an article discussing why twelve users is the magic number for Online Dynastys. Check out his article, Why Twelve is the Magic Number.
"Online gamers across the country had previously spent the past few years cursing EA for their failure to add online leagues to their sports games which was finally alleviated somewhat this past year when Live and NHL sported them. Before this, it seemed to be a yearly tradition where EA would answer the online leagues question with the simple comment of, 'maybe next year.' Well, now next year has finally come for football gamers."

The flexibility EA gives us this year with the dynasty is phenomenal.

I think not playing a human opponent every week will be great for the leagues because of time constraints.

    Good article.

Yeah that is the thing that I think will make the dynasty more accesible to more people. There are those that can pretty much always beat the CPU when they play online they struggle for W's. This will keep more people playing knowing they may only play 3 or 4 humans a year. I love the fact that the CPU's will still recruit and (hopefully)they will do a good job. If this is done well I think it will make the online dynasties last much longer than a season or two simply because people want to see how "their kids" progress.

A little of topic, does anyone know when is there gonna be another update to the "Media members online dynasty"?

I don't really agree because if there are 6 people in one conference then that will ruin it.

That's a very general statement with no support. Care to elaborate?

Wouldn't it create parody and competition? Too often people build up their team too quick and then dominate. Having 6 people compete within the Pac-10 would be great for the conference IMO.

I've been a bit confused with this considering I feel as if the dynasty is the same as a league.

Basically you're playing a dynasty you would in your own home, but with 11 other human gamers?

I can end up not playing a human in whatever bowl if I end up sucking it up??

Yeah there is a chance that you will play more than just your bowl against the computer. If you are in lets say the SEC and everyone controls an SEC team then your non-confrence games will be played against the computer but will count towards the dynasty(leauge). so you could play a few games against the CPU based on the difficulty and slider set that your dynasty is using. Hope that helps a little.

well, it really sucks I won't be one of the 12 in an online dynasty because I can't get connected to live YET my previous 360 could.

I have never liked EA football games, infact I hate all EA football games. I just hate they way they play compared to Visual Concepts.

However the idea of a dynasty online is brilliant. That alone might make this a warranted purchase for me.

Unfortunately from what I have heard and read the style with which the game plays is still the same brand of "EA" football.

I will download the demo and give it a try to see if I can live with it, but the idea of online dynasties without having to play a human opponent is fascinating.

Nice article. I think 12 (even though we are only doing 8 which like) is a good number and the max probably for a league with longevity.
There have been tons more positive than negative on the threads and most of the negatives aren't anything major. From what I've seen this should be agreat palying game. There are a couple small issues but nothing that will keep me away from this game.

Re: Why Twelve is the Magic Number

I agree, twelve is a very nice "sweet spot". If you're league is over-saturated with humans and the vast majority aren't hardcore, then what you end up with is an increased likelihood of people dropping out as they lost interest with the game, and more (frequently) challenging match-up time constraints when you're scheduled to play someone.

On the other hand, if you have too few, its almost like, "what the point?!?".

The article makes a very good point that 12 is the magic number because it is the number that allows a league to fill up any major conference if the league so chooses so it is always possible to play a 100% human conference schedule.

I personally absolutely love the idea of humans scattered across conferences. I think its necessary to have a good balance of human and CPU opponents so you don't always have to schedule an appointment to play your scheduled opponent. And man, personally, its so exciting thinking about the idea of post-season human bowl matchups as you represent your conference against the SEC, Pac-10, etc, or scheduling home-and-home OOC games with somebody from another conference.

And while on this issue, the only real gripe that comes to mind about this (and EA, I hope you consider this for next year) is the fact that you cannot watch two other humans face off. I would love to watch two other people face off in a big game, especially during Bowl season when i'd cheer on any Big Ten team...including the only time the Wolverine in me could ever allow me to root for ODogg's Bucks.

I understand bandwidth concerns come into play with spectators, but if can work, I hope you guys (EA) look into this for 2010.
