What I hope EA has learned from all of this is that they don't need to include 85 new things in Madden every year. They should try to add 1/3 of what they normally do and use the rest of the time to make sure the game is glitch free. This way the consumers will be happier with a fully working game on day 1, and they won't have to spend man hours working on patches after release. Once the game is released the full Madden staff can start working on the next years release.

Re: Madden 09 Roster & Patch Update

Everyone wants these devs to make a game every other year right? So in essence, these guys made a game this year and then are going to follow up a month after with bug fixes and additions. Not sure what more anyone could ask for?

If you can afford a next gen console and the price of next gen games and an HDTV to enjoy the games on you should be able to get a decent internet connection.

And if you living in an area that does not have board band yet just about any phone carrier can service you with a cell phone that has a broadband data connect that you can tether with your router.
This is NOT a vaild point. I know for a FACT that high speed internet is not available everywhere.
It's not about being able to "afford" all the high tech toys. Saying that because you can, then saying garbage about not being "able" to afford highspeed internet,is ridiculous.

I'm sorry but companies are not going to press\replicate update CD's for all their customers each time the game gets a patch or update after release. If you are not able to get a broadband internet connection in this day and age you are going to be missing out on ALOT and not just updates and patches in games. The entire internet is currently built around broadband speeds, good luck even surfing the web nowadays on dial up. The rest of us should not be punished because of that some people are unable to obtain broadband.

The reality is a yearly series like Madden is NEVER going to launch in perfect condition. Facing that reality it is a much much better option to be able to patch and update the game automatically in a download then to have to wait till next year for them to fix the issue.

Sorry if you can't get broadband your SOL on this issue.

Where did I ever say anything about pressing update cd's??
Punished...lol wow ,that's a good one. I am able to currently surf the web AND get updates through dialup.
I am able to afford highspeed just fine, but staying with relatives until our house is finished,it's not an option, and I sure as hell ain't getting satellite internet just for game updates and patches.
As for your last point.....NO,I'm not sol. Like I mentioned earlier,I'm able to surf the web AND get updates and patches on dialup.
The only thing I can't do (which I couldn't care less about) is play other people. When I had highspeed I hardly played online anyways...so no loss there.

Swanlee, by your reasoning, if EA decided to take out the edit player feature for everyone except those that bought a messenger kit, you'd be fine with that? Simply because if you have the capability to pay for a next gen console and a game, you should be able to pay for a messenger kit? Currently, they allow a way around that. Just like they (microsoft) have a way around playing DVD's on your system without having to buy a remote. Or what about not being able to hook it up with your internet connection unless you buy a wireless adaptor?

Don't say it doesn't compare, because it does. These games should be fixed before they're ever sent out. I don't see how that would "punish" anybody else.

When I bought a 360, I could afford a lot of things. Right now, I can't afford a gold membership. Which was fine with me because I never played online anyway because of all the cheesers, trust me, I tried to get used to it but everyone out there ruined it for me. And even when I could afford it, and was willing to deal with the cheesers, I STILL didn't want to take the time out of my day to have to go through the process of wiring my console to the router, setting up an account, dealing with any troubleshooting problems. Some of us don't have that kind of time when we're at home, not everyone is laying low for the summer. Some of us barely get a chance to play as it is, so when we get that chance, we don't want anything hindering our ability to play.

On that note, I've got a perfect example for you. I was playing franchise mode in Madden 08. I was going through drills to improve my rookie's ratings before each game. This was a big part of the fun factor for me. Then, it screws up and freezes every time I wanted to train a player before a game. I didn't want to continue playing my franchise without being able to do that, yet the few times I was able to sit down and enjoy the game I didn't feel like spending that time to hook it up with our internet connection, set up a silver membership, deal with any set up issues, find out what the pppoe information was, etc etc etc. I just wanted to play!!! But unfortuneately, the game wasn't fixed without a patch so I wasn't able to.
                    next-gen? "next-gen"? "NEXT"-gen? NEXT-GEN!!!??? Seriously???

Sorry bud, have to ask....if you can't afford $49.99 a year (which equates to $4.16 a month) then why are you buying a $60 game?

That aside...every game ever released has issues and things that can be patched...why do people act as if this is a new phenomenon every year? Game programming is not an exact science.

Also, technology and time marches on...at some point, industry has to stop supporting legacy and older techs. Internet access is there for a huge chunk of the gaming community...they go hand in hand, in fact. So, why shouldn't the gaming companies utilize what they have with extras like DLC and patches?

Uhh you can download patches and DLC content with a free silver xbox live account. And if you don't want to wire up your 360 to be on the net then that is just to bad for you.

All I'm hearing is hypothetical excuses for people that either don't have internet or people to lazy to create a silver live account and get there xbox 360 on the net.

For those people you are SOL, Microsoft, Sony and game publishers now have an easy in-expensive automatic way to get it's user game patches and DLC pretty much instantly.

In my mind this is a good thing.

I was a pc gamer even before the internet hit big in the late 80's early 90's. Even back then games often shipped with ciritcal bugs and issues and it was damn near impossible to get fixes for those games.

We are lucky to be able to get fixes now so count your blessings and stop making excuses as to why you somehow can't get your console online.

lol...this thread has driven into an interesting debate. I'll leave the point/counterpoint alone except to say this...It is all moot. It is cheaper, more convenient, and more efficient for EA (and any other company) to allow for patches/updates via internet. Now back to the debate...
