to do it without Live, you would need an Xsata or an Xport device(same people that made the memory card transfer kit thing). it basically connects the 360 hard drive to a PC, then you can access the drive and transfer files between them with a program(one is called Xplorer360). then you would need to find the update and transfer it to your 360 hard drive. game updates(patches) are in the cache folder on the 360. you can not view this folder in the menus on the 360 console, so a memory card will not work.

but if your not very savy in computers, you may not want to try this, because you can do some damage to the 360 hard drive if you happen to move/delete the wrong files.
